Most adults would like to think school has left them equipped for most things that life throws at them.

But a particularly tricky IQ test has left internet users stumped, pushing their mathematical and linguistic skills to the limit.

Jumping right in at the deep end with a complicated numerical question, the Playbuzz quiz is certainly not for the fainthearted.

Try your hand at the quiz to see how you score, and scroll down to the bottom for answers (no cheating!)

That was the easiest question on the test!

So if someone has never been told what a ratio, or a lough is....does that mean they have a low IQ?

Shoes vs. pairs of shoes.

If everybody thought alike the world would be a dull place. I’m not exactly mainstream myself. Creative but analytical, the left and right hemispheres don’t seem to be talking to one another until the end result just sort of pops out seemingly unbidden. When I’m on my game I’m a master of the apparent intuitive flash but it’s not really intuitive. When I’m off my game I might even seem a little, well... tetched, lol. I can play mainstream if I have to and do well at it, for a few hours at a time. Beyond that is exhausting.

Two minus signs in a row become a + sign, or did when I learned arithmetic decades ago.

When I switched majors from physics to art history in my senior year of college, the architecture instructor ridiculed me in class for not knowing what the Erechtheion was. (The ancient Greek building where the veranda is held up on the heads of maidens) Humiliated, I stopped four total strangers on the quad and asked them if they knew. No one did. (though I DID get some strange looks)

So, no, the trick is to know how to jump over new vocabulary.

You make an excellent point that the people who make up these tests they torture us with are not always the brightest and we shouldn’t have undying faith that they’ve got the right answers.

OK, how does -26 - -37 end up at -63? Subtracting a negative adds the value, not subtracts.

IQ is kind of a subjective sort of thing. Some people are smart in one way while others are smarter in different ways.

Part of what I love about FR is that people are so different and they bring so many different ideas together, mostly respectfully. I think I think like you do.

You’ve got a giant genius brain!

How is your head big enough for your brain, you ol’ smartypants!?! Doesn’t matter. What DOES matter is that you’re REALLY FREAKIN’ SMART!!! Seriously, tell us all of your secrets. We want to gain your knowledge and be exactly like you! Get out of here and go save the world or something, ‘kay?

I guess. When I was a child I tested near genius. If that was actually legitimate, it sure didn’t help me a heck of lot over the years.

What does IQ really measure?

I remember being approached, age 18, by a gentleman in the Chicago Public Library’s reading room and asked to take an IQ test. Turned out he wanted to date me. Strange, but he was a fun date.

11 is correct. When you have a double negative (minus negative 37), they cancel out and become a positive. Thus negative 26 plus 37 = 11 is correct.

No, it says 112 PAIRS of shoes, not 112 shoes. The answer is 8 cases.

It did. But you chose what you did with it. When given choices, you chose the ones that made you happiest. Hasn’t the faintest thing to do with worldly success. Has everything to do with trying to be happy.
