Original Bullitt Mustang found, takes its place alongside 2019 Bullitt

Few movie cars are as instantly recognizable as the 1968 Ford Mustang that Steve McQueen drove in "Bullitt." That Highland Green car known now simply as the Bullitt Mustang took on a 1969 Dodge Charger on the streets of San Francisco in one of the greatest car chases captured on film. For decades, the original car was thought to be lost. That wasn't entirely the case. It's simply been kept out of the public's eye. Now it returns to the spotlight, finally taking its rightful place next to its successor, the new 475-horsepower 2019 Ford Mustang Bullitt.

That Charger was extraordinarily rare — it’s the only Dodge ever built with five hubcaps.

Yes, not to mention that they were self-replacing while on the go!

Re-watched the chase scene this week. When the cars are going down the streets with hills you can really hear the banging of the metal hitting the street. They beat the tar out of those cars.

Those were used to hold the camera for interior shots.

BTW. I read there were 4 used for the movie. 2 were destroyed.

Wasn’t there a scene where he had to slam on the brakes because a lady was crossing the road pushing a baby carriage?
Yeah, a real heart stopper.
Hard to believe they filmed that "live," but it was NYC so maybe the pedestrians didn't think anything of it.

Yeah, those unibody vehicles with "short" suspension travel just don't survive long with repeated airborne travel landings.

There were apparently an unknown number of "Generals" sacrificed over the years.

I can see why that may remain on the wish list for some time....

The car was apparently driven by Kiernan's wife, a teacher at a school in New Jersey. The car's clutch went out in 1980,

No explanation about the clutch needs to be said.......LOL!

I’ve run 1024 since 1992.

800 might be reasonable limit based on today’s tiny pocket screens.

I think we have moved on to 4k for archival stuff.

And the sad part is, they could make it exactly the same.. So why not do that?

EPA and other govt. safety standards........

As a side note, there's many European super cars that will never see the streets of the US until they can be modified to meet the EPA emissions standards and once that happens, while fast, they won't be the original car they were designed to be........

As a post script, back in 2016 I heard a representative of the oil industry explain the impact of the Obama administrations's EO demanding that the auto industry develop vehicles with 50 MPG capability.

He said that the only way that will ever happen without switching to electric power is for the automobiles to be made even lighter and the engines being forced to utilize 94 octane gasoline or higher as opposed to the standard of 87 octane......

The result: the higher cost of gasoline to the consumer

Yeah, any Colt revolver is priced out the yinyang. Especially Pythons.

Pinned & recessed Smith & Wessons are climbing, too.

Maybe blued steel & wood still beats composition & parkerizing as what a handgun should look like. Does it for us old fogies, anyway.
