After the German shepherd Rumor won the top prize at last year's Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in New York, she had her first litter of puppies and retired from competition, like many female show dogs.
By contrast, most top male show dogs can keep competing for years, and it is no coincidence that they also win "Best in Show" in the prestigious annual competition far more often than females, breeders and handlers said as they prepared for this year's show, which opens Monday, Feb. 12 in New York.

/src on/The Westminster is racist for discriminating against mutts./src off/
It’s because like most in the animal kingdom sans humanoids, males are the more definitive and eye pleasing gender
Male dogs and larger and much more defined with their particular breed characteristics
Humans and a few others are exceptions
Maybe the female dogs are making lifestyle choices to stay home and raise a family rather than enter the grueling world of these competitions. We shouldn't devalue female dogs that decide that raising a family is more important than a career!!!
And sexist, for discriminating against bitches.
We need an ERA for dogs.
The message is clear. Want to win? Don’t be somebody’s bitch.
:)
Dog shows are rigged
Ask Hulk Hogan
So, she had puppies and took some time off the show circuit to care for them.
Just like many human women do. Which leads to this huge “gender gap” in terms of wages that we keep hearing about. Which is directly attributable to nature.
Also, I am guessing that the male dogs are generally larger, with well-defined muscles, etc. Again, back to nature.
Kind of like God intended it.
Except in the case of lions, LOL...where the males sit as masters and the lionesses do all the hunting. (I may be remembering this wrong; please forgive me if I’ve made a mistake.
In any case, I think we can all agree that this and any other dog show has it out for female competitors. /s LOL!
LOL! Please see my post 8. GMTA! ;)
Take care, FRiend.
Julie :)
There is a clear reason for that.
That being said, I love my girl dogs.
They are, just look how much Terriers win and how many of the judges are Terrier breeders.
Yes, dog shows are as fixed as wrestling
I wouldn’t call that fixed althougth I do find it annoying. The people that run the WKC show get to pick whoever they like and they usually like terrier breeders. They’ve done it again this year. I’ll watch anyway.
The TV show “Lassie” was about a supersmart female collie. But the production crew used only male collies because they were easier to train & had better retention of what they were taught.
That long thick collie coat concealed sex differences.
GSD Crufts 2016 - the missing TV footage
And it cause a lot of outrage among many reputable GSD breeders and dog lovers.
But then Im partial to Boxers as we had one when I was a kid. We got him from my mothers cousin who was a breeder and showed, and our dog was from a litter bread from a retired grand champion he bred that took Best of Breed at Westminster some years earlier. My brother showed Boomer and he took a few ribbons at some smaller shows, but wasnt championship material. But he was super smart and very protective yet good with me as kid, a great dog. My brother also learned, as his cousin had warned him, that the dog show world is very clicky and its sometimes not your dog, but more who you know or are connected with, especially at the upper levels.
The thing is that theres really very little or no money to be made from showing dogs. All the money to be made, after winning enough shows, is in the breeding. A male dog can be bred with several bitches without effecting his appearance or vitality. But a bitch cant be shown while pregnant and isnt ready to be shown afterward for some time.
Muscles and shape. Muscles and shape.
A female has a litter, and she’s going to need to work out to get her shape back.
Males don’t have to deal with that.
Sexism? SEXISM?!!!
How about this?
Since 1877, the Westminster Kennel Club has NEVER awarded a Best in Show to any Dachshund, a.k.a. The King of Dogs!!!!!!
How’s that for discrimination?!
