Reports of "zombie-like" raccoons puzzle Youngstown police
WKBN ^ | Molly Reed

In the past couple of weeks, Youngstown police have responded to over a dozen of these raccoon calls — all of them with reports of the same strange, zombie-like behavior. The majority of the calls happened in the daytime, too, even though raccoons are nocturnal.

“I looked over there and got distracted because I saw a raccoon coming our way,” said Robert Coggeshall, whose playtime with his dogs was interrupted by a fiesty and sick raccoon last week.

He put the dogs back in the house, but said the raccoon followed them to the door.

“He would stand up on his hind legs, which I’ve never seen a raccoon do before, and he would show his teeth and then he would fall over backward and go into almost a comatose condition,” Coggeshall said.

He attempted to scare the raccoon away, only to find the animal was not interested in leaving.

“He’d come out of it, walk around and then he’d do the same thing again. Get on his hind feet and show his teeth,” Coggeshall said.

Police were called to 14 similar situations in the past three weeks. The reports detail “particular behavior” and large noises or motions not scaring the animals away.

Blue tongue disease in deer affects them similarly...they act stunned and don't seem to scare off...

chronic wasting disease is also a possibility...

Were these raccoons saying, “Fox News wants to impeach me”?

That’s a sure sign of madness.

yes rabies first thought. Distemper is another possiblilty, common in raccoons and will cause similar symptoms. In both cases people and pets, livestock need to be kept away from the raccoons. We are allowed to dispatch them hre and have them tested for rabies.

“The Ohio Department of Natural Resources said it doesn’t sound like rabies, but rather a disease called distemper.”

The animals were put down———why on earth wouldn’t they KNOW if it is rabies or not?

Since it’s Youngstown, they may be off springs of Jim Trafficant’s hair pieces. Some of those things looked liked dead raccoons.

It's raccoon distemper that is cyclical and occurs when their populations get out of control. It's nature's way of controlling the populatin.

I saw it back in the mid 90's here in S.E. Michigan. I was at at a golf course at one of the area metro parks and saw about 5 wandering aimlessly. My dad was the head park ranger at that time and whenever he saw one on the park road he would dispatch it and have the park maintenance pick it up.

broncobamacoonitis

Nasty stuff. If an affected animal approaches you call the police so they can come and shoot your dog.

Whatever it might be, treat it as if they are rabid. So long as it is one of the possibilities that is the correct preliminary diagnosis unless you want to get those shots.
