Few figures of the 20th Century have been as relentlessly maligned as Francisco Franco Bahamonde, who ruled as Spain’s Caudillo (supreme leader) from 1939 until his death in 1975. Franco’s death was celebrated with vulgar, vindictive glee in the obituary columns of Establishment publications that had treated the passing of Communist mass murderers with respectful solemnity.

The Condor Legion (German: Legion Condor) was a unit composed of military personnel from the air force and army of Nazi Germany, which served with the Nationalists during the Spanish Civil War of July 1936 to March 1939. The Condor Legion developed methods of strategic bombing which were used widely in the Second World War shortly afterwards. The bombing of Guernica was the most infamous operation carried out by the Condor Legion. Hugo Sperrle commanded the unit’s aircraft formations and Wilhelm Ritter von Thoma commanded the ground element.

He saved Spain more than once.

He saved them from the brutality of Communism and also from the meat grinder of WWII.

The fact that he is so relentlessly attacked in the media is pretty good proof just how strong Communism really is in the media and most of Europe.

Exactly. If the Republicans won the Civil War, Hitler would have marched right into Spain, and probably would have taken Gibraltar.

Not really. The Spanish Blue Division fought for Hitler on the Russian front. Spanish volunteers fought with German units. Spain was a cover supporter, but still a supporter, of Hitler throughout the war.

Franco threw a few bones to Hitler to keep Hitler off his back.

Lots of French and Dutch volunteers also fought in Russia. In fact, Holland had the highest percentage of volunteers for the SS of any occupied country.

We're talking about Spain and the claim that Franco kept them out of World War II. Officially Spain was neutral. In reality they supported Germany with troops, information, seaports, and in other areas.

Hitler wanted Franco to take Gibraltar, but Franco refused.

Franco knew he had to do some things to keep Hitler from turning on him, in the end, the alternative would have been full-blown Nazi occupation.

Kind of like the United States did with Britain and Russia before Pearl Harbor ...

Kind of, though I would think Britain was a few levels above Nazi Germany. Lend-Lease to Russia didn't really kick off until the U.S. was in the war.

Well, considering that the RAF and the 8th Air Force didn't run any bombing missions against them, their cities weren't reduced to rubble, and all of the invasions of the European continent went on both sides of Spain, I would sort of come down on the side that they kept out of WWII.

Franco's Spain was also our covert ally during the Cold War and provided bases for our B-45 and B-47 bombers. Our bases had to fly the Spanish flag and were kept discreet. The huge US base at Torrejón de Ardoz , outside Madrid, was marked by a sign reading simply Base Aerea (air base) that pointed down a two-lane road.

True, but there was a good deal of equipment that was shipped to Britain that ended up being trans-shipped over to Russia before our entry.

And don't mistake what I'm saying: I truly idolize Winston Churchill and am extremely thankful for the British defiance ... but I also believe that Francisco Franco, like Augusto Pinochet, were men of their times that were needed to save their countries.

I doubt that was ever a real possibility. Hitler had other plans and he knew that Franco wasn't going to cause trouble regardless.

Spain was attacked by international communists. I don't blame them for taking any help they could.
