There’s a new debate storming the internet that’s reminiscent of the furor over that white and gold dress back in 2015 (or was it blue and back?) People are torn over an audio clip of a computer-generated voice, with some listeners saying they hear the word ‘Laurel’ in a deep male voice, and others saying they hear ‘Yanny’ in a higher-pitch. The recording went viral after it first surfaced on Reddit earlier this week. It was later posted on Twitter, where it has been liked more than 50,000 times and stoked a fierce debate.....

I hear Laurel in a deep male voice and can't imagine hearing Yanni in a high pitch voice. I am an older male who has lost a lot of his upper frequency hearing due to using way too many loud power tools for too long. Chainsaws, circular saws, nailguns, and riding mowers were my main offenders.

Loud sounds didn't bother me when I was younger but as I got older, they really bothered me more and more. Even using a quieter tool, I now wear 3M Peltor X5A hearing protection. They are so quiet, it is weird to wear them.

The article mentions that if you suppress the high frequency, people hear Laurel. If you suppress the low frequency, people hear Yanni. My ears can't hear the high frequency, so I get Laurel.

My high end hearing is so shot that a smoke detector can be beeping the low battery signal and I can’t hear it from 3 feet away. Of course that makes my wife frustrated. “You can’t hear THAT!!??”

“The only reason I clicked on this is to try and figure out why it is even being talked about... still don’t know”

You were SUPPOSED to click on the user’s youtube channel (or wherever it is). And the reason is, they’ll make more money with every click to their site. (I still don’t know how that works either.)

When I’m watching it play on TV I hear “laurel.” When I’m in another room but can still hear the TV I hear “yanny.” Weird.

Same here. Heard the clip play on ‘The Five’ in my truck on SiriusXM, and only heard laurel. But listening to youtube clips I only hear yanny.

I might question the election results. After all they are a big time liberal rag that lies all the time.

That's spelled Yami: it's a yogurt. Ad from the Sixties: "What's a 'yami'?"

I do know that my wife and I cannot hear the same name in the Laurel - Yannie example, but she is definitely hearing what she say she hears. I on the other hand cannot see how she does not hear what I am hearing.

But I do think it is in our brains, because sometimes she hears the same thing that I hear. A told her she is a switch hitter. (LOL)

My 20 year-old daughter just had me listen - I hear Yanny - so there goes my theory on it being the higher frequency thing!

She said something like “Well - like DesCartes said ‘I think, therefore I am’. The only thing we can be sure of is the thoughts we are having - all of our senses might just be tricks and presenting an illusion to us.” I suppose, but I doubt it.

I heard “turn me on, dead man” when I played it backwards.

That’s OK - when I first heard a few songs on the radio, I heard lyrics/words that weren’t there. “Jennifer” sounded like “Genesca” and another oldie sounded like “Freak out in the garden”.....any ideas of the song....?

Even President Trump has an opinion:

There is an audio file that seems to sound like Laurel or Yanny depending on how you hear it. This dispute between Laurel vs Yanny has gone viral. Even President Trump has an opinion

Sadly, I agree that our brains have the ability to interpret what we see and hear and feel. I don’t like it, because it means we cannot always believe our lying eyes.

In this case, I go with those who think this sound is illusory in the sense that it is close in many people’s experience to sounding like either of the two choices. So our brains pick one or the other. I never heard the Y sound, but my wife hears both at different times and so I have to believe her mind is having trouble catching the same sound each time.

I’m guessing this has to do with what frequencies our ears hear... Hearing loss isn’t just a ‘quieting’ it’s some sounds weakening over others.
