Not according to Hollywood.

Let me remind you that, technically, Dreamwork’s Rise of the Guardians made a LOT of money, about double its 145 budget. However, it was widely reported as a colossal box office flop, and ultimately resulted in 350 Dreamworks employees being laid off.

Besides, do I really have to remind you of how JJ Abrams reacted when The Last Jedi did poorly? He accused its audience of being afraid of female leads. http://www.breitbart.com/big-hollywood/2018/02/18/j-j-abrams-last-jedi-critics-felt-threatened-women/

Profitability generally requires the domestic to at least meet production. That’s why Guardians was a flop. They don’t get as high a percentage from international, and it’s harder to get the money. Dreamworks took a write down of $83 million on it, of course Hollywood accounting so who knows for sure. But they were at least officially willing to declare it a flop in the books.

Of course with Star Wars you’ve got all the other revenue. 2 in 5 months probably really hurt it more than anything else. Especially when you factor in home market which hit for Last Jedi 2 months ago. It’s just too much for any franchise.

Yeah, and in terms of at least the Chinese market, The Last Jedi was a flop (and China’s pretty much Hollywood’s go-to market, far more than even the domestic market), and from the track record, it looks like Solo’s probably going to do even WORSE there than The Last Jedi did.

Well given that Rogue One didn’t do as well as Last Jedi. I think they need to rethink the stand alone movies, they just don’t seem to have the market the Episodes do. Which is too bad, that’s where the real creativity can be. Episodes are stuck being Star Wars movies, while the stand alones can be something else (Rogue is a WWII movie, Solo is a heist movie), it’s more fun when you can break out of the mold. That’s why Marvel movies are better than DC, they’re mostly not superhero movies while DC is stuck in the superhero rut. Or maybe it’s just the one a year thing, give it some air, one a year is a tough pace both for creators and audience.

I thought at one point Kasdan was a pretty good writer, now I am not so sure. Some of his early stuff I liked, “Body Heat” for example.

His son evidently is a real idiot and Leftist, Father is to.
Another writer I don’t like is Tony Kushner, Spielburg uses him a lot and is another hard Leftist.

Now Larry Gelbart was a great writer, he did a lot of the MASH TV stuff till the insufferable Alan Alda took control and ruined the show. Larry was a renowned script doctor, the guy you called in the fix a really bad script, usually right before and during filming. Those kind of guys made huge money for their efforts.

I finally got around to seeing a trailer for “Solo” last night. I decided to watch all the 2018 trailers that interested me on YouTube. Frankly what I saw with Solo really did not look that bad. I am really looking forward to seeing the next Mission Impossible movie, Rebecca Ferguson is so unreal. Also want to see the new Equalizer picture.

By the I saw one for a new version of Robin Hood coming out in the Fall. Looked okay except it had Jamie Foxx in it and I can’t stand him.

Lucas once said that if hit on about 50% he was aiming for in a movie he considered it a success. I may have to go see Solo and see for myself.

You’re comparing a 4-day weekend, projected out after only two days, to a 3-day weekend. I compared opening day to opening day... actual facts.

Seriously? They're remaking it AGAIN? They JUST remade it with Russell Crowe a few years ago. Can't they wait a decade anymore? Reminds me of their crappy Spider-Man remake with Andrew Garfield.

Was that Crowe one any good? All I know about it was that they totally changed the initial idea which, was actually original with the Sheriff of N as the main character.

I’d be down with a version that was historical plausible. There was some old one that actually portrayed the antagonists as French speakers. A native Englishmen recovering tax money from Pepe LePew would have modern significance.

Well, I can tell you one thing: The Crowe version actually had a pretty neat defense of the Magna Carta, and the storyline’s the closest we’re ever going to get to the original Robin Hood, ie, the one that existed before Joseph Ritson ruined him by turning him into a proto-OWS type in order to show solidarity to the Jacobins in the French Revolution.

There’s an incredibles sequel?!

There is. Sadly, it looks like it's become a vehicle for a feminist "teachable moment". Sigh. Disney ruins everything eventually.

UPDATE: Solo has now taken in $161 million, compared to Rogue one which had taken in $376 million. That means Solo is down 57%. And it’s getting worse and worse. In the last 3 days, Solo took in $9 million. During the corresponding time, Rogue One took in $57 million.

Looks like Solo will end up with about $205 million, which will be down 62% from Rogue One. Production costs alone cost Solo $250 -$275 million. Thoughts are that Solo probably would need about $800 to break even, because movie theaters, marketing, film manufacturing, etc all add costs. Likely, it will make less than $400 million internationally.

While many movies have made a lower proportion of their spending back, that $400 million loss would be the biggest loss ever.

Real sources are projection a 50 to 80 million write off. 4 movies and a multiseason TV shows in 3 1/2 years is too much.
