Leslie Jones Hopes Comedians and ‘SNL’ Can Move Past Constant Trump Jokes
The Wrap ^ | June 13, 2018 | Brian Welk

Leslie Jones said she hopes that during the next season of “Saturday Night Live,” the show can avoid some of the constant political humor and Trump jokes.

“I hope next year we can do more funnier stuff instead of a lot of political stuff this year, which we had to,” Jones told TheWrap in a phone interview. “There was so much stuff that was happening, there was no way that our show, with the responsibility that we have, would not to cover that stuff. It was just too important. But I do hope that next year will be a lot more funny-funny based stuff, more comedy based stuff instead of a lot of political stuff.”

Jones clarified that there is an important place for political comedians on “SNL,” and the greater comedy world, but stressed that there’s such a thing as too much.

“There should be a stream of comics that come and do that type of comedy, because we do need that. And I love looking at that type of comedy that explains what’s going on and make it funny so you can really realize this is ridiculous,” Jones said. “But there should be more than that as far as funny comics that come and really make you laugh. Like so gut laugh. Comedy is a release just like art and music. All of that is the same thing. You need that release. It can’t always be serious. You need The Three Stooges just as much as you need John Oliver.”

Did they ever take shots at Obama, or Hillary, or any Democrats

There was one segment where they mocked the 'Cash for Clunkers'

I know a lot of people long for the Ackroyd/Belushi era, but I think the show’s real golden age was actually the Dennis Miller/Phil Hartman/Mike Meyers/Dana Carvey/Jon Lovitz timeframe. It was kind of a 1927 Yankee’s lineup.

It was Free Armisen who did Obama a few years. He is half anglo as his mother is German but also half oriental as father is Korean.

Ratings are excellent but I am sure it’s boring for the cast to do it week after week.

They had two different guys for the rare times they did. Ironically at least one was a guy in blackface.

Fred Armisen, in makeup to make his skin a little darker.

I guess you could call it "blackface" but it was a far cry from Al Jolson.

Trump is a target-rich character. If the writers were talented, they could have a field day with him. But their "humor" concerning him isn't funny. It is hateful and, worse, lazy ... neither clever or sophisticated.

And the clapping seals that make up the audience are pathetic. They will cheer for anything anti-Trump, no matter how lame.

Yeah, they were pretty skimpy when it came to Obama. And Hillary for that matter.

But, here is the one time they got it right on Trump.

BEST SKIT IN A LONG, LONG TIME!!!

Ain’t been a Celebrity Hot Tub, or I’m Gumby dammit in a couple of decades.

Not even a Mr Bill.

There’s SO much leftie repressed anger and rage out there right now it’s hard to “consume” any media.

Funny thing is, it’s a proportional relationship. So the more winning we see...more of the whining.

I play games with a soft leftie...and we’ve gotten half way in the door to a conversation about it. Why lefties are SO mad he’s having success.

He really doesn’t understand why Trump is having the successes he is. Keeps asking me why....why is this working? And he’s not happy about it working....he wants someone else to be doing it. He didn’t understand Reagan either.

Feels super strange to make that comparison...but I feel confident that if Ronald has a clue what is going on right now he’s feeling pretty good.

I remember when Jay Leno was asked why he didn’t do jokes about Obama and his reply was ‘he’s just not funny’. I figure he was just intimidated into not doing Obama jokes by the NBC execs. There wasn’t joke in the Obama comment ‘I think I’ve been to 57 states with two more to go’??? And some comedians on SNL were censored by the NBC execs when they were sending up the O J Simpson story. Norm MacDonald actually lost his job, as there was one exec that was good friends with Simpson. SNL has always been political, in front of the camera and behind the scenes. But they used to be funny..............

They would first have to move past their political bias and hatred. It won't happen.

Oddly, you didn’t “have to” do any Obama “jokes” when Obama was in office. Strange that.
