Millennials Are America's Worst Tippers
Fortune ^ | June 18, 2018 | NATASHA BACH

Now millennials can add “bad tippers” to the roster of negative stereotypes they’re associated with.

According to a new study from creditcards.com, 10% of millennials do not tip at all when eating out. In contrast, only 3% of the older generations don’t tip.

Even when millennials do tip, the study found that the median gratuity is just 15%. This is under the national average, and significantly less than Gen-X, baby boomers, and the ‘Silent Generation,’ all of whom leave a median tip of between 18 and 20%.

The same attitude applies to tipping those who provide services, such as Uber or Lyft drivers: 18% of millennials don’t tip them, even when provided with an option to do so. Nevertheless, close to 27% of the millennials surveyed suggested that they would prefer having a service charge included in items, thereby paying higher prices, and then doing away with tips.

” . . . family get up without tipping and then remove tips from two different tables as they left.”

I have observed the lifting of tips from tables as well. At certain restaurants, where I have concern the waiter or waitress will not receive my gratuity, I hand the waiter the tip or pay the check with a credit card and include the tip on the charge. When the service has been outstanding I hand the server a tip of at least 20%.

Well let’s see, Millennials are youngest and bottom end of the wage scale and they tip the least .... SURPRISE! SURPRISE!

However, I have run into unfamiliar servers, at times that believe that they don’t need to write down my order, that they can remember my order just by listening to me give the order, all the while smile f#%$&ng me.

Not sure if you just made up that word/phrase but I've never heard it before but know exactly what you mean. It's usually women doing this but I have seen some guys doing it too. Their service generally sucks but they EXPECT a good tip. A good tip for them would be to tell them to do a better F'ing job!

I'll have to remember that phrase.

Some millennials are into their 30s-———not exactly kids.

Black customers have been well known for years as bad tippers. Multimillionaire Lebron James has been seen in Akron to host parties with tabs of hundreds of dollars and leave no tip for his homies..

Sucker. If they “have less money,” what the hell are they doing eating out?

There have been three occasions when I was with a group of at least six people when the waitress did not write down anyone’s order.

They did not only get all the food orders correct, even with substitutions, and knew what order when to each person without having to ask.

Every member of the group was amazed at their ability to keep it all straight. The waitresses also had great customer service skills and tips from each diner was at least 25%.
Our income.
My wife and I always tip at least 20%. If the service is very good; 25%. If the prices are low for what you get, 30% is not unusual for us. My wife and I are retired and while not wealthy, still manage to spend 20% less than

Anyone who looks at my credit card receipt at restaurants would assume I do not tip. I tip with cash. Servers love that.

I have 2 Indian grandmas, so I am part Oklahoma Indian. My observation is from Arizona — Apache, Navajo, etc. Go into a very nice steakhouse, or Mexican place, and all the waitresses are secretly begging the hostess, “Please don’t seat them in my area.” A table of 8 people, with a $200 tab might tip $5, if anything at all.

I am glad that you are the exception to what I’ve observed.

Didn’t make it up.

Happens a lot where I work.

While instructing operators on what to do next, while they have little or no English skills, they smile, nod their heads and then do nothing that resembles the instructions they have been given.

Smile effing.

My regular servers are phenomenal.

They are richly rewarded.

I don’t do percentages, I spread the wealth.

You take your kids out to eat and teach them how. They don’t know how otherwise.

I got one of these for my phone but I don't think it's working right. As much as a phone costs these days, the tip calculator should be built in, I say.

If the tip is on a credit card then it will be recorded for tax purposes so when I have concerns I will shake hands at the end and pass the money that way. I will tell them that I just want to make sure they get the tip and not someone else.

Plus tips on a Credit Card are charged at 3%, so you’re better off tipping them in cash.

The generation that thinks the music, movies, schooling, and technology should be free doesn’t like to tip?

Imagine that.
