Unless all you do with your computer is browse the web, watch Netflix or perform a few other simple tasks using dedicated apps, the answer is no.
For power users no.
However for many of us, they are great tools.
One of our adult sons uses a I Pad and his I phone for everything at home. At his office, he has a MS desktop that the IT guys update and load programs. His IPad is over 4 years old.
His aunt, my sister uses an I pad/phone for everything she needs. She and her daughter use I pads for genealogy on Ancestors.com and for most of their emails.
5+ years ago, we bought our grand daughter the biggest I pad available and a wireless keyboard. She was attending a private high school and they recommended this unit for all of her books in 4 years of school. She used her mother’s I Mac at home for big reports. Saved her back instead of lugging 50 #’s of books each day, she carried an I Pad.
She still uses it in her second year of college.
For my wife, I just bought her an Acer 10 inch chrome book which is as fast and as powerful as my Acer Chromebook 15.
She uses it for email, Kindle and whatever she does not want to do with her Samsung smart phone.
In about 5 minutes I had her on line and all of her data on the Samsung was transferred painlessly. Also, many of her apps were updated by Chrome and work seamlessly on the Samsung.
Her new Acer folds 4 different ways to use.
She can enter info/data with the built in keyboard, stylus or her fingers or using Google voice entry.
She can use a mouse via a USB slot or the builtin mouse pad.
She and I use MYSMS for our texts on our Samsung phones and our Acer Chromebooks. MYSMS works with I phones and pads.
For consumption, yes.
For production, no.
My desktop is old and slow - and allows me to compose and produce music. I will stick with that.
I have health issues that require much time in a recliner with my feet elevated and laying flat with pressure off of my lower back. My iPad is my library, my stereo, my bookstore, my game station, my phone, my news source, my connection to my support groups, my note pad, my photo album and more.
It keeps me sane and actually I use it as a distraction/pain reducer. I’ve listened to many, many audiobooks I would not have access to because i’m Confined to my home much of the time. I can darken my room, turn on a book and focusing on the book i’m distracted from my pain levels.
I have a PC that I do some applications on, but maybe 10% of what I do on the iPad.
Only took me about a month to get over that in 2010. I had many a grandson willing to tutor me. I had never used an Apple product before that. Now i’m On my 4th one. I wear them out!
I use a WiFi connection to a keyboard.
They aren’t for everything or everyone, but mine is my lifeline to the outside world.
The iPad Pro is having reported bending problems. I’m ready to upgrade my old iPad Air, but I’m worried about structural strength.
It’s a dumb question. The two devices serve different needs, even though there’s overlap between their respective capabilities.
I own a smart phone, a tablet, a notebook, a laptop, and a desktop computer. They all serve different, yet similar roles in my daily life.
"Need" is subjective, and varies from person to person.
Thankfully, at least for now, I still have the power of choice where it comes to my personal needs.

I haven’t read the article but I haven’t needed more than my iPad Pro for a long long time. And I don’t want to sit at a desk. Ever.
But I’m not a gamer or doing some other assignments for work that need a computer.

You can take calls on your iPad if you want. I choose not to.
Define "more powerful."
And if you think a touchscreen device is handier to use than something with a keyboard, that can only mean you've been into the reindeer juice again.
They’re FUD reports from the efforts to push the Apple stock even lower than it already was pushed. There isn’t a huge "bendgate" problem with the new iPad Pro unless you intentionally try to bend one. You aren’t going to stuff on in your jeans pocket.
