Thompson Center makes a pistol that can accommodate many rifle rounds. (223, 308, 30 cal. etc.) Single shot.

As I was once told by a GBI agent: yes it is tiny but it’s a lot faster than people think. If it penetrates the chest cavity, it tends to richochet off the ribs nicking everything in it’s path...

Just loaded up 200 rounds of .30 carbine for my plainfield and my son’s original Inland. They call the caliber equivalent to a .357 magnum. But the 110 grain grain slug doesn’t quite have the stopping power. At Chosin Reservoir the light bullets didn’t make it through the thick quilted winter clothing of the Chinese infantry. It got a bad rap after that.

My dad carried one during WW2 throughout the Solomons. There, small, lightly dressed Japanese were taken out much easier.

Personally I love the gun.

Only the 44 mag ones (I wish Ruger was still making the .44 magnum semi-clone of the 10-22) can beat mine, and the 10MM ones equal it: Mech-tech 'upper' receiver in .460 Rowland.

That is the least expensive (yet well made and reliable) way to get into a pistol carbine, if you already have a Glock or 1911 'lower' to mate with it.

“I’m no .22 fan for defense but by the numbers .22LR has killed more people, I believe, than any other caliber.”

I don’t believe that.

M1 Carbine myths about not penetrating frozen uniforms during the Korean War, I know its BS, You should know its BS, but for the hell of it I decided to waste time and ammo proving it!!!!!

I know someone who carried one in the South Pacific also. He said it was a good jungle gun.

Chiappa M1-9 didn’t make the list. It’s an appearance clone of the M1 carbine but a blowback action. It takes Baretta FS92 magazines from the local milsurp shop.

I’ve fitted a folding paratrooper stock to it and added a reflex sight and it’s about 2moa at 100 yds with cheap Russian ammo.

I thought very hard about going Mech Tech, but my son won out in convincing me to go with an AR 15 upper.

So I went with the 358 Yeti instead. The 358 Yeti pushes a 180g projectile up to 2600fps from a 16" barrel and a 200g to 2500fps.

And I can reduce down to shoot 38/357 pistol bullets.

“My BIL has a .30 carbine pistol. The local indoor pistol range will not allow him to shoot it there.”

I have a Roger Blackhawk in 30 cal carbine with scope mounted in it. Carry it on the seat of my truck when driving around the deer lease to shoot feral hogs.

I still have a Camp 9 mounted in a very old (70’s?) retro fiberglass foalding stock and a old red dot. Heavy by today’s standards. I sold the 45 because it kept cracking the stocks. Should have kept it. Wish I’d kept every gun I’ve sold.
A local prison had changed out the guards Marlin Camp 9’s and 45’s and sold them to a local gun shop that stuck in a barrel at the end of the counter. Maybe 20 in various conditions.$150 each take your pick. Bought 4. Didn’t know how lucky I was.

What is a pistol caliber these days? They have chambered pistols in 460 Weatherby.

I'm guessing that orthopedic surgeons love a .460 Weatherby pistol - great for business. That pistol seems to be another example of just because you can do it doesn't mean that you should.

To answer your first question, I would say a caliber that is first popularized in a pistol and then migrates to a rifle.

A .41 magnum in a Ruger Blackhawk pistol and a companion Henry Big Boy carbine are on my wish list.

Yep. Sometimes I kick myself harder for what I didn’t buy than for what I did sell.

I have 3 of them, two of them are 3-screws. Definitely recommend hearing protection.
