I personally find it very hard to have sympathy for those that die on this mountain... they know damned well they could die on it and choose to do it anyway... and this isn’t something you just spur of the moment do.. they spend years and tons of money to be able to do it...

So while I do feel sorry for those they leave behind, I personally find it very very difficult to have much empathy for those who die on that mountain, whatever the cause.

I always considered people who run marathons, as people who never read the end of the story... but that’s just me.

So, it’s become a Disney ride.

Welcome to Disney's Dumbass Mt. Come to the "death zone" and then stay for a while.

Make it a crime to speak — boast — of one’s participation in a marathon or Everest ascent upon pain of death.

So, it would be a crime for me to mention that I ran Boston in under three hours? Achieved a goal through hard work and dedication? Kill me now!

I’m impressed. I don’t think that I could ever have run a marathon.

Creepy place to climb, that’s all I’ll say, apart from a disclaimer that I’ve no interest in such an activity.

[snip] On May 22, 2017, reports surfaced about the discovery of four bodies inside a tent on Mount Everest. The latest deaths, who were identified as two foreign climbers and two Sherpa guides, take the death toll this season to ten.

On an ironic note, the bodies on Mount Everest were discovered by a rescue team sent to retrieve the body of a Slovakian climber who died on the mountain the week before. What makes this case so baffling is that no one can identify who these four climbers were, no agency records or family members ever came forward either. [/snip]

https://www.wowamazing.com/featured-stories/unidentified-bodies-on-mount-everest/

[snip] Before 1996, one in four climbers had died making the ascent; 1996 saw huge numbers of people attempting the climb and the statistics for 1996 reveal that only one in seven died. [/snip]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_people_who_died_climbing_Mount_Everest

(the running average is only 6.5% mortality)

This is an older article on the same subject. It’s in an interview format along with a pic of a similar line. The person who took the pic shared our views. Since this thread, I’ve been reading a bit about climbing. A man by the name of Nims is on a quest to climb all the major mountains in just 7 months. If you want to read about it, it’s called Project Possible.

I’ve been on the Great Wall several times (long before the gondola), and the first time I became separated from the people I was with. I thought they were ahead of me, so I kept climbing — looking for them. (actually -— they had gone up the other side, but I didn’t know that) So I climbed and climbed and the steps became higher and higher, making it very hard to get up them. Finally I came to an area where the restored wall stopped and beyond it was a broken wall that stretched off into the distance. What a sight! Quite an experience and I’m so glad I did it.

Also, I had taken a pebble from my back yard with me, and exchanged it with a small pebble I found there.)

So, it would be a crime for me to mention that I ran Boston in under three hours?

Me, I quit running the day I left military service. I get my exercise from walking, and I enjoy it. Nothing like doing a ten mile stroll (3 hours) while listening to my favorite songs or the audio book of Atlas Shrugged.

I've done some wild and crazy things in my life, such as getting my airborne wings at Fort Benning, enjoying a day of hiking and rappelling in Water Canyon, UT (at 59), and keeping up with Germans during friendly drinking games when I was much younger.

One thing I did as a dumbazz 2LT that, in retrospect, was totally stupid: sneaking up on a sleepy guard at 3 AM while on staff duty officer. The smart thing to do was let him know I was in the area.
