1994, former NFL player O.J. Simpson led California Highway Patrol on a low-speed chase in his white Bronco. The 90-minute televised chase occurred shortly after he was charged for the murder of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman.
OJ’s slow speed getaway was an indication of his guilt,
but more specifically an indication of his lack of faith in
his fellow ferals, who would kiss his ass and set him free.
This day is burned in my memory too. I was a crew member on Philadelphia’s Tall Ship Gazela and we had just docked at Penn’s Landing after sailing back from a festival in Norfolk (where I met Ollie North who was running for office at the time).
As I was walking home to my apartment in the Italian Market, I started noticing red embers falling all around me. It was the world famous Palumbo’s Italian restaurant burning down! (Sinatra and Jimmy Durante were just two regular performers.) Who knows if the mafia had anything to do with setting the fire?
Anyway, I finally get home when I find my fiance Bill leaving me a note, calling it off. It seems that while I was sailing around the eastern seaboard for a month, he was carrying on an affair with his old flame, a former Eagles cheerleader. (They’re married now BTW.) I gave him back his ring and rejoiced! For I too was carrying on a red hot affair with a sailor from an Outward Bound ship. 100% true.
Wow. That was a day worthy of a “You are there” intro by Walter Cronkite.
[stentorian Cronkite voice] “What kind of a day was it?
A day like all days, filled with events that alter and
illuminate our time.”
One of two “you-gotta-see-this” moments in my life where a friend or roommate hunted me down and told me I had to run to a TV and turn on the news. (The other was the Branch Davidian fire a year earlier.)
