Sportsnet has confirmed that Don Cherry has been fired from Hockey Night in Canada over recent remarks that caused uproar.

Cherry, 85, had singled out new immigrants in Toronto and Mississauga, Ont., where he lives, for not honouring Canada’s veterans and dead soldiers.

“You people … you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey, at least you can pay a couple bucks for a poppy or something like that,” Cherry said Saturday night. “These guys paid for your way of life that you enjoy in Canada, these guys paid the biggest price.”

In a statement issued on Twitter Monday afternoon, Sportsnet said that after discussions with Cherry, it had been decided that it was “the right time” for him to step down immediately. Sportsnet said Cherry had made divisive remarks that do not fit with its values.

“Sports brings people together — it unites us, not divides us,” the statement from Bart Yabsley, Sportsnet president, said. “Following further discussions with Don Cherry after Saturday night’s broadcast, it has been decided it is the right time for him to immediately step down.

My dad had season tickets, behind the bench up under the rafters, he and the other locals would yell all kinds of stuff...

I remember Grapes turning around and yelled back at us once.

The whole section went nuts!

“When contacted by the Toronto Sun, Cherry refused to apologize. “I have had my say,” he told the paper on Sunday.”

It’s not just the media; there are many, many PC-infected members of the Canadian public, including many hockey fans. Pathetic.

When minorities band together it’s called pride. When whites band together it’s called tribalism.

I read a story about a Muslim fertility doctor who was burning women’s Filopian tubes down to nubs without their consent. I remembered that when you mentioned genocide. I don’t know what the racial makeup of the women were but many Muslims would probably have no problem with waging genocide against American infidels, and Western infidels for that matter.

The heritage of Canada was based on British and French Christians. Then the germans, Ukrainians and Italians
The common thread was their faith.
It’s that same faith that brought civilization and progress to the planet, became the free iundustrialiazed west, unlike all other shitholes.

We get the hockey channel on our cable TV. I watch it for the scores and up dates etc etc. But in the last year or so it has become too PC for me. It makes the tennis channel look like hard core conservatives. Hockey in general has tended to be too PC for me in the last few years. It is another great game that the libs will screw up.

After the Raptors won the NBA title, I suspect you’ll start hearing more and more derision of Hockey in Canada as the sport of “White, Rednecks”.

Well, they won't win another - because their star player left for California's better tax climate. :)

There was something special about hockey in the 1970s. Very few players wore helmets so many of them were instantly recognizable without even having to know their numbers. Also, the fighting was much more part of the game. In most cases, the fighting players got nothing more than a five minute major and were back on the ice in no time at all to drop the gloves again.

The game got ruined somewhat by the mandatory helmets and the "neutral zone trap" type of play.

I watched the segment and it seemed to me that he was referencing millennials and tweeners of all descriptions
which care little for the sacrifices symbolized by the poppy.

If Ron MacLean felt he should apologize then he is taking the side of said millennials and tweeners against a true Canadian.

I am done with HNIC until Don is restored to his rightful place.

We lived in the same town as Don Cherry. In 25 years the demographics of the city went from primarily European to 46% Indian (Punjabi in particular), with a planned 200,000 more coming by 2037 according to “the plan.” In 2018, our family attended remembrance day in the city square where 2000 ordinary Canadians gave 2 hours of their time in the freezing cold to honour our fallen. The multicultural doctrine of the left would predict all cultures would attend. I can tell you that at best there where 20 or so indians in attendance (mostly city employees who were paid to be there). Half our city is now low quality South Asian immigrants who are profoundly uninterested in our country. They’re here either on work visas, or scammed their way in as a first step get hordes of their elderly relatives in the door for free healthcare.

Don Cherry is absolutely right. We moved when we finally admitted the truth to ourselves: We didn’t want to be invisible minorities is a foreign speaking Canadian city.

“Sports brings people together — it unites us, not divides us,”

Not anymore, it doesn't. The left destroys everything it touches.

I used to play, I was a goalie. I remember Gump Worsley.
