Having a Peloton during the pandemic saved me. But the more I ride, the more wary I get.

Like many people in quarantine, every day I find some time to hide from my children and hop on to my Peloton, the stationary exercise bike with built-in internet-enabled spin classes that has become a must-have for some people during this time away from, well, everything. I love my Peloton, which (despite the hefty price tag) has more than paid for itself in burned calories and much-needed zen. And I am clearly not alone.

Money quote:

And this upper middle class "whiteness" informs everything I've experienced about Peloton’s almost cultish community.

LMAO. As the author acknowledges that is the demographic for a exercise bike starting at over $2,000 plus a $39 a month fee. Has the author not seen the ads of rich, good looking white people living in their upper 6 figure to 7 figure homes?

Hiking with my dogs in The Nature is almost entirely free, and I’d rather do that than virtually anything else.

And if I really, really wanted to ride my bike, I’d go ride my bike.

The Nordic Track ads on TV are completely embarrassing. The NT is interactive like Peloton, and the ads are replete with suggestions that riding the NT is kind of like belonging to a singles dating site. And, of course, everyone has oodles of money.

If it tires him, then maybe he should get one of those bicycle gas engines off of Ebay.

I use a Pelaton at work and I love it. If I bought something like this for home, however, there are much less expensive spin bikes.

I once was a bicycle racer who competed at a national level. I have a trainer that hooks up to the internet for group rides which simulates hills and drafting other riders with video that I output to my big screen TV. It cost a fraction of what these Peleton Exercise bikes do and allows us to ride our own bikes on it, even our tandems.

Even though they are popular, I do not actually know any serious cyclists who own a Peleton. It just goes to show what millions of dollars of advertising can convince people to buy.

I actually did put an 80cc engine from eBay on a cheap mountain bike. It didn’t look as nice as the bike in the picture but it was a kick in the pants. When you hit the power band of the 2 stroke engine it would really go. The setup is so light compared to a motorcycle.

In my home I have a staircase (14 stairs down, 14 up) which I do 30 x a day = 840 steps in total. Add that to my daily walks and who needs a Peloton?

My best friend for close to 6 decades, my wife, and I will be walking in the sunshine on our culdesac for about 30 minutes. Fresh air, free Vitamin D and a great companion at a great price like yours.

Look, if you can afford a high rise apartment with floor to ceiling windows as the people in the Peloton commercials own, then you can afford to wax eloquently about the sheer necessity of owning a Peloton.

Two months now since the gym closed I do six miles a day. My day off is on Fridays when I drink a bottle of wine and wish for a hair cut!

I became serious about road cycling when stationed in Colorado Springs. At 43 years old (now 62) I was riding with the professionals living/training in the local area. I bought a TACX trainer I hooked up my old Lightspeed Tuscany road bike. I was able to find mine for $120 off the normal price with free shipping in March. Added a 9 speed cassette and I was ready to ride indoors.

When the weather in middle of nowhere Idaho keeps me from going out on my Gravel or Road bikes I can now enjoy virtual rides online using Zwift (can quit when weather improves and reenroll when winter comes) for a significant savings over the cost of a Peleton trainer(with their subscription costs).

I have a feeling this company is going to be bust in a few months, these luxury items lose demand when the economy tanked

Right now they are giving away free access to the app

Wish I created an app that tells people to get off their rears and do something

Rather than riding an expensive peloton, shouldn’t people give that money to the “less fortunate “? Just askin’ for a friend

I could not get past the interest of staying in place at home and spinning a wheel like a hamster instead of getting outside with the elements and enjoying THE RIDE.

I just did a 3-day 120 mile trip at 53 and I didn't even train for it.
