COMMS Alert!! (prepare for plan B)
self | jimjohn

Posted on 01/08/2021 8:20:28 PM PST by jimjohn

Having no inside information, the trend appears that conservative networks are under assault. Now is a good time to have a plan B.

This is an alert to Ham operators, shortwave and low-power FM broadcasts. Frequency and contact info needs to be made available where possible. If you have a web site and/or podcast, please make your ip address available in case of domain blockage.

Any sensitive and/or peronal isnfo you wish to keep should be copied to local hardware. (get a min 2TB drive to backup everything).

This is not a drill or 'the sky is falling'. Do not panic. But Comm nets may drop at any moment.

Yes, It's time people. Doesn't matter if you were in Washington or now. 11 days to go, and they are scared of something.

More later - as long as we have signal. Have faith, and mount up.

You’d probably be better off with an FMRS radio than a CB radio. But Citizen’s Band is still out there, most truckers still use them. Drawback is range. With a real 2-meter or 440MHz radio, you have the ability to use repeaters. CB’s do not. You do need a Tech license for ham radio though, although a 8 yr. old can pass that test and many children do have their licenses!

Saw a black signal detector truck driving around this morning with various antennas and dishes on top. Wisconsin plates. They are looking for unauthorized signals.

Okay....what’s your suggestion for one that’s USA made?

The Japanese ham rigs are the best built. Yaesu, Kenwood, Icom. Check Gigaparts or Ham Radio Outlet. I just picked up a Yaesu FTM-7250DR from Gigaparts. You'll need a stout power supply for full power. A Powerworx SS-30DV is a great choice. A mobile mag-mount antenna for 2m/70cm will work at home or in the car. The MFJ-1734 or similar will do the job.

I did lots of ARES/RACES emergency services work in San Diego during the big fires. My rigs live in a small gym bag with the radio, antenna, cigarette lighter power cord ready to dash out the door. The new Yaesu is a refresh since my last good mobile rig was a 1976 vintage Icom 22S. It was time for an upgrade :-)

When running mobile on the cigarette lighter power cord, set the TX power to 5W so you don't blow a fuse. A more permanent installation to the battery will allow the full 50W TX power.

Just the usual classified ad meet message for me

“Imitation crab meat” or “toy HO trains foe sale” will get my attention

Ha, if things kick off, I will be driving around to random locations (avoiding traffic cameras obviously) and briefly broadcasting random words and phrases into the local repeaters. Waste their time and energy chasing meaningless drivel. Or will it be the real deal? They’ll have to burn a lot of resources to find out.

The FT-65R is a good handheld at a very affordable price point. Try to get a battery pack that supports use of ordinary AAA or AA batteries to keep with the radio. If your rechargeable battery gets too low in the field, you can fallback to the AAA backup packs while the rechargeable is recharging.

I'm an Extra Class too. In addition to the 2m/70cm emergency rigs, I have some QRP HF (Xiegu 108) and an Atlas 215XL (not QRP) with antenna tuners and dipoles suitable for field use. I haven't had time to set up my digital HF modes, but the hardware is in hand to do it.

Oh my gosh. I’ve changed computers a time or two since then. We used to have a lot of fun on that channel. A lot of old FR timers, some of who aren’t even around any more.

Any time I get/build a new ‘puter, I make sure that is installed (just in case).

Also, Linux usually comes with its own IRC client pre-installed.. but I still like mIRC ;-)

I have a MacBook Air. Have always used Mac products. My oldest son who is now 54, got me started years ago. Over the years, because of jobs, he moved away from Macs, and has used Linux for quite a long time. He’s a tech whiz. I don’t know how he remembers all the stuff. But I can’t call him if I have a question about anything with my Mac because he hasn’t kept up on them. I’m not very technical, but he taught me how to check this and that, and I search online to see if anyone else has had the same problem, and look for recommendations. The only thing I use my laptop for is the internet, paying my bills, downloading TV programs, and working on my family tree.

“ChiCom communications gear. What could possibly go wrong?”

My Wouxun’s been working flawlessly for 10-11 years. Even original li battery, although I do have the AA backup battery packs. The alkaline AAs have spoiled themselves (leaked) while the original radio battery charges and discharges fine.
