As we age, our abilities inevitably decline. The activities of daily livings (ADLs) capture those skills we need to remain living an independent life – primarily getting dressed, bathing and toileting, and eating meals. Bathing and hygiene are particularly crucial – simply put, if you cannot bathe and use the toilet where you are, you need to be somewhere else. Simple home modifications, a grab bar in the shower or tub, an elevated toilet seat, a shower seat all are inexpensive additions that
“reduce injury, enable independence, preserve dignity, and improve quality of life in older people with irreversible disability for complex multifactorial reasons.”
Those simple modifications can reduce falls by 19% and increase independence by 30%, translating into considerable savings to the healthcare system over the cost. It should come as no surprise that this is another area where we may have failed “our seniors.” Here are findings from a new study reported this week in JAMA Internal Medicine.

I heard that it takes three days bedridden to lose muscle tone; and it takes four months to regain it. Moral of story, keep moving even if very slow. I also think stretching is important. Stretch those muscles
My thought too. I don’t want to be a burden on my daughter and grandson. We live in a 5000 sq.ft.house stuffed to the gills.
In Shatner’s case, his long life must be due to finding the So-Clean C-Pap cleaning solution.
If you make it past 85 you’ll forget why you questioned doing it.
👍👍
I made plans during the construction of the retirement home.. one level, 3’ doorways, walking showers big enough for a wheelchair so the house is good, problem is I live on the side of a mountain, small one lane road with lots of curves, no guard rails and steep as hell.
I tell the kids if they can’t get me on the phone look down the mountain on their way up for the truck !!
The local Wendy’s, Arby’s, Mickey D’s, and every other company needing help around here can’t even buy any workers-thanks to the feds and their schemes-so who and/or what do you think the old folks homes are hiring? I have a dear friend, whose wife is now paralyzed from the neck down-thanks to a bad auto accident-he has had to provide all her care for her the past 6-8 weeks because the local home health care agency for this area that used to provide for her cannot hire anyone to work!
I figure 77 is a good number for me. At that age (which is still several decades off), I think I’ll still be able to function, but I’ll be looking at decrepitude coming up fast. That’s about as far as I intend to go.

75 for me. 50 something now and I have a plan. Based on observing the old timers in my family.
A sait you are ... and I mean it!
Aw heck, the plan is to kill us all. They haven’t got enough old folk prisons to keep us around.
Tomorrow for me!
Their plan is a forced dirt nap. Sounds good don’t it?
But she is only 55!
When you are 85 it has to be hard to tell if you are having an orgasm or a heart attack. Both cold be lethal.
I really appreciate having simple things like the walk in shower

As it turned out I had 2 total knee replacements 2 years apart. Being able roll my walker into the shower was awesome. Never would have made it with a tub.

I’m 80 and do anything I want. Genes, good luck or whatever but I do know enjoying life does not include putting a future cap on it. And you have no idea where, what (or) if you will be at age 77.
Congratulations!! You made it to late middle age!
Last day of July for me. Egads. How did this happen?
