A Federal Aviation Administration advisory group is urging the agency to replace words like “airman” and “cockpit” with gender-neutral terms like “aviator” and “flight deck.”
The FAA’s Drone Advisory Committee put forth the recommendations in a report released Wednesday, part of a broader push for equity in the agency and aviation industry.

cockpit (n.)
1580s, “a pit or enclosed space for fighting cocks,” from cock (n.1) + pit (n.1). Used in nautical sense (1706) for midshipmen’s compartment below decks; transferred to airplanes (1914) and to racing cars (1930s).
The etymology of “cockpit” isn’t what they think it is.
“It’s a beautiful thing, the destruction of words.”
― George Orwell, 1984
Get the commies out of the FAA.
Single seat fighter AC don’t have a “FlightDeck”
“A Federal Aviation Administration advisory group is urging the agency to replace words like “airman” and “cockpit” with gender-neutral terms like “aviator” and “flight deck.””
Wasn’t it Senator Sheldon Winehouse who said that there are traditions that will take a long time to manage through? I think he said this at his all white beach club.
<< replace words like... “cockpit” >>
The military is becoming a big pussypit.
Aviatress works fine too, just like actress, waitress, stewardess. It won’t change my speech. There are exactly two sexes and nothing wrong with recognizing that. To do otherwise is to deny science.
Let me make something abundantly clear.....with a suicide rate over 11 times the norm (19 if they had the surgery and the hormone treatment) the FAA has every responsibility to NOT ISSUE Class 1 Medicals to any transgender. That is a matter of extreme negligence to the safety of the flying public. After the German Wings incident this is something they need to specifically speak to.
How ‘bout barf bag? Can we please keep the term barf bag, because we’re going to need them.
“Flight deck” refers to the surface from which an aircraft takes off or lands on a carrier. It’s always a good idea to have confusing terminology when attempting to land a multi-ton aircraft on a carrier when you’e approaching the deck at 150 MPH.
" ... gender-neutral terms like “aviator” and 'flight deck'....”
"Aviator" is masculine. "Aviatrix" is feminine. Which goes to their grammatical incompetence.
Xx or Xy.
That’s it.
Follow the science.
Wonder what the woke military will do with the term “joystick”.
Aviator is not gender neutral. An aviator is male, and aviatrix is female. Of course they’ve shoehorned both genders into the male version. Like actor instead of actress. Rise up ladies, don’t let them insist that male is better!
They only know what they read on Facebook and Twitter.
They are smart. They make things go.

SD: what is your reaction to this? You would have a better perspective than all the rest of us.
Manufactured comes from the Latin manus (hand) and factus (made). It has nothing to do with “man”.
