CHECKED OUT I’m a lawyer – mark my words, self-checkout will disappear, it won’t be worth it for stores to keep their doors open

SELF-CHECKOUT machines have been a constant feature in supermarkets and grocery stores across the U.S. for years.

The kiosks have helped make the shopping process more convenient for customers as they don't have to wait in long lines.

But, self-checkout-related theft has become more prominent and there have been occasions when shoppers have been wrongly accused of stealing amid technological errors.

Dod Ghassemkhani, a criminal defense attorney based in San Diego, believes that the machines will disappear in the long term.

He told The U.S. Sun: “Self-checkouts will eventually go because there’s so much theft.

"At some point, it’s not going to be worth it for stores to keep their doors open.”

RE: Soros run cities of the future....

Man I heard maybe in the late 90s in an interview was from Russia.
He said our supermarkets and trucking systems to maintain products and so on showed “Your American government distribution system is much more efficient than ours in Russia.”

What’s left of free enterprise and our freedom of choice.

When a local developer built a long row of cinder block apartments not far from here an immigrant from Poland said “That is exactly what all the housing looks like in the former Soviet bloc countries. All that drab way.”

Whoopee.

As an aside, when I worked in a supermarket in the 1978-1979 time frame, the front end positions were sexually divided. Only the women could cashier and only the boys could bag or shag carriages in the parking lot. The women wore pink smocks and the boys wore dark blue.

Our front end manager at the time actually said that only women could be trusted to cashier because they were more honest than boys. Whenever a boy asked if he could be a cashier, the manager would say "Sure, if you are willing to put on the pink smock."

So there were no male cashiers in that supermarket.

Not going away. Prices for honest people will go up to cover the theft.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Be honest pay a little more, someone has to pay for the thieves.

I was forced to be an untrained part time worker at my local grocery store. If I make a few mistakes on scanning and packaging, we’ll what did you expect🫢🧐

Self Checkout is great. It’s time for the get-off-my-lawn old yellers to just shut up and move out of the way of technological progress and modern conveniences that work.

Interesting story. Amazing how things change.

Today if asked to wear the women’s pink smock the guy would say “Certainly, you silly goose.”

I quit shopping at Lidl because of their nagging self checkout. Weigh your bags before you start. Move an already scanned item? wait for attendant. Run out of room on the bagging area and move stuff to your cart? wait for attendant. Wait too long to bag a scanned item? wait for attendant. Etc...

“I also don’t like to use the ATM either. I prefer to go into the bank talk to a teller.”

every time I go into the bank to withdraw money I always get questioned about what I want my money for and then ask what I am going to do with it.

last week I told the guy “Strippers, Whores and Coke”

he is like umm??

so I said Coca-Cola dude, unless one of the girls wants Pepsi instead.

He called over his manager for approval cause it was over his limit went over the amount and told the manager my reason for wanting my money was “nothing special”

I am guessing there are maybe some wrong answers ?

RE: It’s time for the get-off-my-lawn old yellers to just shut up and move out of the way of technological progress

Hey, I saw two or three older people who have something failing that makes large cart self-checkout (not one bag——a big shopping with milk gallons, big cans, case of beverage and maybe a chicken or turkey) hating to have to bend with weight to maneuver the elusive bar code to the right angle many times for a cart of food. No problem when I was younger.

Go easy on us older people or....or....or... well just go easy.😇

My recollection is that self-checkout became very common when Democrats were pushing hard to raise the minimum wage.

Where I get my groceries there is never a wait to check out longer than a minute, and usually none at all. The checkout girl rings up my groceries as fast as I put them on the belt. Meanwhile the bagging girl or guy is loading the bags with groceries and putting them on a cart. She's usually wrapping that up just about the time I'm scanning my credit card. Then she carts my groceries out to my SUV and loads them in the SUV.

Explain how self-checkout could possibly improve on that experience.

We have a lot of “twelve items or less’ self checkouts. Where I shop it is a useful alternative. Hate waiting to checkout half a dozen items while the person in front of me has a bulging cart full. So I avoid that happening by doing it myself.

I’ve been using curbside pickup for my Walmart run

2 jobs supported

One to pick and bag, another one to bring it to me. And that one gets a nice tip out of the deal

They would much rather put the items back on the shelves than have the state liquor control board inspectors show up.

“forced to be” ??? by an armed guard?

There you were. I would expect you to live up to your own standard. I guess that’s what you did.

Screw this, I wish every place had self checkouts. Love ‘em! I’m out quicker and of course I don’t cheat or steal.

Don’t care for self-checkout.

If I want to get yelled at, I can wait until I get home...
