CHECKED OUT I’m a lawyer – mark my words, self-checkout will disappear, it won’t be worth it for stores to keep their doors open

The only old geezer I want to wait for is me!

LOL! Yep, nowadays I’m often the oldest person in the store. Maybe in the whole Mall!

They won’t get rid of them, they will evolve though. I find the one’s we have now a little annoying and slow because of all the anti-theft scale and bag nonsense built in. It’s cumbersome. But they are good when you just want to buy a couple things. Not good if you want to buy a bottle of wine though. For that you need a human checkout. Stupid things can’t scan my ID card like all the market delivery services will do?

Anyway self checkout will evolve. Amazon’s market stores have been testing RFID tag checkout. You just fill your cart, then as you walk out the door all the RFID tags signal what you have in the cart and you checkout on the phone or it automatically charges your card on the phone. No clerks, no scanning, no swiping. I don’t know how successful it will be at anti-theft for those committed to a smash and grab type operation but for those who just want to honestly get in and out, pay in full without hassling with machines or humans, RFID tag checkout will be a very good convenience.

If I ain’t getting a 20% discount

Ha! Do you argue with your bank ATM machine too? They take teller jobs away; but I suppose they require some maintenance work - still fewer maintenance than a full time teller.

I find ATM locations convenient - typically at my convenience/gas station where they are free.

They prevent me from driving to a bank location, saving time and gas.

I can tell you they are restocked with currency, protected by security, and need maintenance… so they’re not a free lunch.

That said people invest in ATMs … so I’d guess they can be a profit center.

I hate going into Walmart, but I needed dog food and they are cheap and close so...

I ran in, tossed the bag in the cart and went to the hated self check out to get out as fast as possible.

An Amish family was behind me. They went to the check out next to me. They had a cart that was about half full. The store was fairly busy. It was mom, dad, baby and maybe an 8 year old girl. They scanned maybe two items. The rest just went from the cart to the bags.

I left the store before them. As I was pulling out of my space I passed them putting the groceries in their very nice Lexus SUV. Mom and dad were joking - giggling and giddy - as they loaded up the vehicle.

Just gotta wonder how many times a day does this happen?

If you believe you look lovely in pink, don’t let them judge you…
