BRUNSWICK, Md. - Authorities say a two-year-old Virginia boy died after being bitten by a pit bull-mastiff mix at a family gathering in Maryland.
The child's family says the 2-year-old lives in Fauquier County and was in Maryland for a birthday celebration for his grandmother.
The boy had been playing with the dog all day long, and as the family was getting ready to leave, the dog, which belonged to the grandmother, attacked the boy.
The boy’s family told FOX 5 the dog was not provoked, and it’s unclear why exactly it bit the child.
"We don’t know. He just attacked him, so. And the dog is very lovable too, so we just don’t know what happened," said Tammy Crawford, the victim’s aunt.

I was attacked by a family pit bull on a visit.
We had all been sitting chatting together, dog included.
I got up to bring our suitcase down the hall to the bedroom we would be sleeping in… and the dog came flying down the hallway growling, barking, and lunged at me, trying to get at me to bite. Repeatedly.
Fortunately, I had the suitcase and it was a narrow hall.
I blocked him a number of lunges until the owner came running down the hall.

When will people catch on about these animals? They have been bred to attack and kill.
The last time this happened, the dog waited until the two other people had their backs turned and then attacked the smaller child.
I wouldn’t be that cynical.
I had German Shepherds that were plenty happy to be with our youngsters. Of course my own son learned from the get-go how to behave as a rule - but he still cuddled up to her and she was perfectly fine.
You have to know your dogs and your kids. And the dogs and kids should be conditioned and trained accordingly. Preferably, dogs should be chosen wisely in the first place. No excuses for behavior traits.
Neither choosing nor training dogs is Americans’ strong point. Never has been.

Again and again, these dogs have attacked and killed children, but some people just won’t learn.
2 year olds should never be left alone with any dog.

The dog worship in our society is through the roof, and still growing more pathetic everyday. Dog owners need to take responsibility for their animals regardless of the breed.
Not all pits lines are bad. Unethical pit breeding is mainly the cause for the unprovoked viciousness — the bad lines/genetics should be identified and culled through attrition/sterilization

Agree! it killed a child took everything that the kid would ever be away. and the dog is lovable?? insane reaction by dog lovers. The parents are beyond devastated I’m sure and the dog is lovable.

Oh, but, noooooo, my Pit Bull is such a sweetheart, he wouldn’t hurt a soul!!
I’ve seen these animals attack and kill kids so many times before. They need to be outlawed or forbidden around children, PERIOD!!
