All Things Prepping, Simple Living, Back to the Basics [Survival Today, an on going thread]
CottonBall

Posted on 09/16/2023 3:07:53 PM PDT by CottonBall

This is an ongoing thread – meaning come back to chat, post information, or ask questions any time. Hopefully the thread won’t stagnate and I’ll do better at posting weekly (or bi-weekly) topics than I have in the past. (anyone willing to post a topic now and then we'll be highly praised and appreciated).

We are in for some bumpy rides, and prepping can only help. If for peace of mind, if nothing else. We have a wonderful gardening thread and a current-events survival/prepping thread, and hopefully this one can piggyback off of those, maybe having a longer discussion about certain topics or … whatever. It's your thread, do what you like with it! (civilly, of course)

Here are granny’s threads, if anyone wants to peruse them:

Since this is Thanksgiving week, I thought we could share some recipes. They don’t have to be made from food storage items, only if you want to share a recipe like that, anything goes! I’ll start with this one. However I’ve never actually made it so….

But I have made the one I shared recently, the pie crust made with shortening powder.

I’d also like to hear if anybody wants to review a recipe, if there’s something that just didn’t work out at all or you have a better way to do it.

Pancake Mix - add 1/2 cup water to 1 cup mix
• 2 cups Flour
• 1/2 cup Milk Powder
• 1/3 cup Malted Milk Powder
• 1/3 cup Powdered Buttermilk
• 1/4 cup Whole Egg Powder
• 2 Tablespoons Sugar
• 1 Tablespoon Baking Powder
• 1/2 teaspoon Baking soda
• 1/2 teaspoon Salt

Good thread for the holidays.

Also, remember that at this time of year, many baking supplies go on sale at the grocery stores. It’s a good time to stock up on what you might want for the year.

Perhaps the FReepers on your thread might find this interesting:

Some thoughts on reasons for prepping and how much to prep.

I have one I nave not used but I do remember needing to put Vaseline on both top and bottom where they meet to keep that from happening.

I do the vaseline every time I use it but only do one surface, just the pot rim, not the lid, too.

If you can find it I can’t recommend “A Failure of Civility” enough, by Mike Garand and Jack Lawson. About forming and maintaining a Neighborhood Protection Plan. The authors are special operations vets.

In a pinch, (I wouldn’t make a big habit of it) if you have an E85 vehicle you can run those on same with the choke in the near to actually closed position. Full choke gives it close to the ideal fuel/air ratio. I’ve done it on one of my old B&S engines testing it. Additionally, E85 can have 51%-83% ethanol, so if you get a heftier gasoline percentage you just adjust accordingly…YMMV 😎

Are those the ceramic ones? I love finding those on job sites with history in the dirt!

I don’t know if it’s because of the “petroleum is evil” mindset but of late I’ve noticed a LOT of Coleman white gas stoves and lanterns on Craigslist etc… these are great, fuel efficient and I’ve always run them on straight unleaded. I obtained my 425 stove in ID for $20, and my two lanterns for $15 and $25. Been using them for about 5 years now.

Just picked up stove and lantern pair for $65 that I’m going to give as holiday gifts.

*BUMP*

We are having a simple Thanksgiving - just Turkey Sandwiches and some sides. It’s just the four of us, and we’d all rather watch Football, take naps, work puzzles or crochet, anyway. ;)

I will be contributing my Bloody Mary Mix, which I can each season from fresh garden produce. Just add Vodka and of course green olives. Lots of green olives. And a celery stalk. Maybe a dill pickle? The choices are endless. :)

I would like to buy (or find at thrift stores) some oil lamps for indoor use when the power goes out. Any advice on the best ones out there and what brand of lamp oil burns the best without smoking?

I used to have a bunch of them for ‘ambiance’ when I had an old Victorian-style home, but lost them somewhere along the way.

Thanks! (I know about/shop at Lehman’s on-line.)

“It’s a good time to stock up on what you might want for the year.”

I didn’t know that! I’ve been shopping for at least four decades, how did I not know that? Well better late than never.

Cornstarch, salt and baking soda have an infinite Shelf life. So stock up on those, store them appropriately, and they will be there when you need them. Cream of tartar might as well.

For baking powder, which does have a finite shelf life, you can substitute baking soda and cream of tartar.

“I do the vaseline every time I use it but only do one surface, just the pot rim, not the lid, too”

That sounds like a great way to do it. I didn’t care much for the directions that it needed to be greased but not every time plus be on the lookout for a buildup. I believe in the manual it even says that needs to be greased but not seen. So how do I know when it is gone? When my lid sticks? I don’t really want to get to that point.

I will finally get to use my new canner after thanksgiving, to can turkey broth.

In store my baking powder and yeast in the freezer.

They do fine that way.

One thing I always look for on sale at this time of year is chocolate morsels. They always go on sale and I stock up on mini morsels which we use in homemade granola and zucchini bread.

Flour, sugar, and butter typically go on sale now, too. I’ve gotten great values on pie crusts as well.

Lots of people are doing holiday baking, particularly Christmas cookies. That’s why I’ve noticed the sales on baking supplies.
