Put it down and do something else until the thread comes back naturally. You’re tired and may not realize it.

I belong to a group call the writers bloc, here on the shore... we’ve put out five anthologies, and writing blocks are handled by monthly assignments... silly subjects sometimes... just writing helps right writer’s block. IMHO.

Stephen King said that you just keep writing. During a blocked period, what you write might be junk..but you keep writing. The good thing is that no one is going to see it.

Then you move on!

The first draft is always garbage. Writing is rewriting.

I don't think Rex Stout ("Nero Wolfe") had that problem.

I was gonna say, “I got nothin’…“, That probably isn’t helpful.

Step away for a day or two. Clear your mind and live in the present.

Then come back.

What is the key scene that started the entire story? That pivotal moment, that climactic ending? I’ve had entire stories evolve from just one sentence that came to mind in the shower, compelling me to build everything before so that the scene unfolds in a logical fashion. Don’t delay writing that scene. Write it first. Every time you are stuck, read it.

Two other tricks I have used is writing a short story while writing a novel or rereading what I have already written.

When the novel isn’t working, write on the short story. If a short story isn’t working, write commentary. The novel will call you when it’s ready.

Rereading what you have already written will put you in the mind to write. There is one book I’ve finished, rewrote, and is going through its 3rd revision.

Keep going, Laz.

I always envisioned that when I retired I would be able to pick my writing back up again, but we both know that I will never see retirement now. Just got the news this week that the COVID lung scarring has given rise to lung cancer. Since I don’t intend to bankrupt my family on my way out the door, I’m just going to plug on for however many days remaining that God has given me.

So write, my friend. Write for those of us who will not be able to. Achieve your dream and know I will be cheering you on from Heaven.

When I was in junior high school, a teacher told me that if you can’t think of anything to write about, write something off the top of your head like, “I like to eat steak,” and that might begin to stimulate your creative impulses and fire up your imagination. Writing something similar, like “I like Kona coffee” or Anthony Blinken’s foreign policy stinks” has worked for me a number of times.

Reminds me of when the working title for the Beatles’ ‘Yesterday’ was “Scrambled Eggs”.

The most useful advice I received on this topic was just to write, over and over, “I have nothing to write, I have nothing to write,” until eventually it breaks and you venture back to the subject at hand.

Perfect answer.

I was published by Harper Collins a long time ago. Have an interesting idea for another book and never write. Maybe start with an hour a day so it doesn’t look formidable.

Try to diagnose the source of the block. Is it fatigue? Are distractions to blame? Is it a matter of the well running dry? Have you written yourself into a corner? Or do you want or need to do something else?

You know the answers to those questions, and they may suggest different remedies as to the different reasons for the block.
