While citizens in North Korea are nearly starving in the face of food price hikes and shortages, the country’s elite are feasting on one of the country’s most expensive delicacies: dog meat.
Meat of any kind is a rarity in the North Korean diet these days, and dog meat costs twice as much as pork. A single bowl of dog meat stew, called dangogi-jang, can cost the same as two kilograms of rice.

What constitutes expensive dog meat, does that mean a Chihuahua versus a German Shepard or some mutt versus a pure breed.

In China they boil dogs and cats alive.
Ate dog meat in S. Korea. Wasn’t disgusting, just wasn’t all that great. Marinated, grilled, and sauced the actual flavor of the meat was lost.
Also had cat in Hong Kong. Cat is disgusting. It does not taste like chicken.

Dog meat is probably expensive because dogs are probably pretty scarce. I’m guessing all the starving peasants ate most of them a long time ago.
