Czarists, then Communists colonized Kazakhstan with Russians and Ukrainians. Stalin collectivized the nomadic Kazakhs, confiscating their herds, and starving them. Now it's a dessert of arable land with nobody to till the earth.

I’m from New York, too. I know every subway line except those in Staten Island, and I wouldn’t be of much use on a plantation, either.
