Confederacy of the determined - (Southern heritage buffs vow "Confederate History Month")
WASHINGTON TIMES.COM ^ | APRIL 24, 2005 | Christina Bellantoni

Posted on 04/24/2005 6:08:20 PM PDT by CHARLITE

Southern heritage buffs vow to use the Virginia gubernatorial election as a platform for designating April as Confederate History and Heritage Month.

The four candidates have differing views on the Confederacy, an issue that has been debated for years in the commonwealth.

"We're not just a few people making a lot of noise," said Brag Bowling, a spokesman for the Sons of Confederate Veterans, the oldest hereditary organization for male descendents of Confederate soldiers. "This is not a racial thing; it is good for Virginia. We're going to keep pushing this until we get it."

Each candidate recently shared his thoughts on what Mr. Bowling called a "litmus test for all politicians." Lt. Gov. Timothy M. Kaine would not support a Confederate History and Heritage Month. Former state Attorney General Jerry W. Kilgore would support something that recognizes everyone who lived during the Civil War.

Sen. H. Russell Potts Jr. and Warrenton Mayor George B. Fitch would support a Confederate History and Heritage Month. Many past Virginia governors honored the Civil War or the Confederacy.

In 1990, former Gov. L. Douglas Wilder, the nation's first black governor, a Democrat and a grandson of slaves, issued a proclamation praising both sides of the war and remembering "those who sacrificed in this great struggle."

Former Govs. George Allen and James S. Gilmore III, both Republicans, issued Confederate History Month proclamations. In 2000, Mr. Gilmore replaced that proclamation with one commemorating both sides of the Civil War -- a move that enraged the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

Gov. Mark Warner, a Democrat, has refused to issue a gubernatorial decree on either side of the Civil War.

Mr. Kaine, another Democrat, would decline to issue a Confederate History and Heritage Month proclamation if he is elected governor, said his campaign spokeswoman, Delacey Skinner.

"i don't see you doing the same."

oh really??? rotflmRao!

then you are BLIND as well as a damnyankee extremist/apologist.

i have ALWAYS pointed out that MURDERING POWs & raping/torturing/molesting/looting the property of civilians (no matter which side the POWs/civilians were on) were WAR CRIMES & CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY. ALWAYS!

otoh, the damnyankee coven on FR has ALWAYS denied and/or tried to evade the FACT that the VAST MAJORITY of PREMEDITATED WAR CRIMES committed between 1855 & 1865 were the WAR CRIMES committed by the union army.

since DAMNyankees are by definition HATERS, that FACT should come as no surprise to anyone with a brain.

And would Sen Byrd be a Republican or a Democrat?

Glad you're so willing to call your fellow freepers "punks"

It'll make it harder to spot you on DU.

"The pre-Klan, san Sheets. "

And just a history lesson here (although you need many): Pre-KKK WAS "san[s] Sheets"

What you said would be like saying "pre-gun, sans bullets"

Bullets are an aspect of the gun. Sheets are an aspect of the KKK. Before the gun and before the KKK, bullets and Sheets(in the costume sense we are using) were not in existance.

"Permanent where it already existed.

Lincoln was against its expansion.

And that would have ended slavery where it did exist, as the slaver owners knew. "

And in clarification: Lincoln did not want to end slavery where it existed, he only wanted to prevent slavery grom growing, KNOWING it would end slavery where it existed.

Yup, John Kerry with a tall hat.

He was before the war, before he was against the war. It's a nuance thing, you know.

SOME scholars have stated that the number of MURDERED CSA POWs may be as high as 100,000...i am inclined to believe the 50,000 figure is CLOSER to the truth.

100,000??? My God, did a single rebel POW make it out alive?????

If I recall, it was a Reconstruction Gov. of Texas (scalawag) named Davis, that stopped the carrying of handguns. Probably afraid an ex-Confederate would shoot him. (for good reason!)

Well, Tex, your recollection is wrong. The Reconstruction Constitution was the Texas Constitution of 1869. It was to say the lest, 'unpopular' because it gave blacks the right to vote, attend schools, ect. When reconstruction ended, the 1876 constitution (which is still the current constitution) was enacted. It contained the clause that allowed the legislature to regulated firearms ownership.

The Texas Constitution

Article 1 - BILL OF RIGHTS

Section 23 - RIGHT TO KEEP AND BEAR ARMS

Every citizen shall have the right to keep and bear arms in the lawful defense of himself or the State; but the Legislature shall have power, by law, to regulate the wearing of arms, with a view to prevent crime.

That
A: You don't know what your talking about.

and

B: Your addressing of other Freepers as "punks" was uncalled for. Especially considernig your lack of discussion with the majority of those you address as such.

In simpler terms-

You could learn how to be a gentleman. And while you were at it, you could stand to sit back and reflect a little before shooting your mouth off.

Never read Exodus, did you?

It's a good read. Try it. It's right around the Ten Commandments.

Don't have my Bible on hand (girlfriend's house) but that should give you some judgement.

And if you think I'm full of it, follow the bouncing ball back to where I (first and second times) refuted forthe's claims that slavery was a sin.

See The Handbook of Texas Online for some of your state's history.

Pretty amazing that you'd have to [repeatedly] correct someone who claims having an advanced degree in American history from a Texas college. Puts the term Revisionist into context though...

Some are. Some are major punks. If you don't care to admit that fact, so be it. This is the internet.

As to lack of "discussion" check my posting history which BTW is several years longer than yours --- and even longer when you consider that posting was non-regulated on FreeRepublic until we began making an impact on events in Washington (Moniac and Linda Tripp) and began collecting assorted trolls from both extremes.

Check my registratgion number. It's actually lower than Jim's, who's house we are all playing in by his permission.
