Mirecki hospitalized after beating

Douglas County sheriff’s deputies are investigating the reported beating of a Kansas University professor who gained recent notoriety for his Internet tirades against Christian fundamentalists.

Kansas University religious studies professor Paul Mirecki reported he was beaten by two men about 6:40 a.m. today on a roadside in rural Douglas County. In a series of interviews late this afternoon, Mirecki said the men who beat him were making references to the controversy that has propelled him into the headlines in recent weeks. Mirecki

“I didn’t know them, but I’m sure they knew me,” he said.

Mirecki said he was driving to breakfast when he noticed the men tailgating him in a pickup truck.

“I just pulled over hoping they would pass, and then they pulled up real close behind,” he said. “They got out, and I made the mistake of getting out.”

He said the men beat him about the upper body with their fists, and he said he thinks they struck him with a metal object. He was treated and released at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

“I’m mostly shaken up, and I got some bruises and sore spots,” he said.

Douglas County Sheriff’s Officials are classifying the case as an aggravated battery. They wouldn’t say exactly where the incident happened, citing the ongoing investigation

The sheriff’s department is looking for the suspects, described as two white males between ages 30 and 40, one wearing a red visor and wool gloves, and both wearing jeans. They were last seen in a large pickup truck.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 843-TIPS or the sheriff’s office at 841-0007.

Mirecki recently wrote online that he planned to teach intelligent design as mythology in an upcoming course. He wrote it would be a “nice slap” in the “big fat face” of fundamentalists.

The remarks caused an uproar, Mirecki apologized, and KU announced last week the class would be canceled.

"What do you mean, "Standing up for?" I'm just not an alarmist like you. I don't read between the lines, jump to stupid conclusions, and badger people when they express opinions of a moral nature."

That would be opinions of an immoral nature. And your silence is support.

"I'll let their words speak for themselves."

And your silence speaks for you.

"A discussion about terrorists and such is not germane to this thread, but like a broken record you keep claiming it is."

It is when a poster is an apologist for terroristic actions. Like a broken record, you keep pretending the post was just dandy.

"I don't care if you brought it up or not."

Sure, why concern yourself with the facts.

"What do abortion and terrorism have to do with a professor who was allegedly assaulted?"

Ask the poster of post 461, he brought them into the discussion.

If you took the time to go back and read my comments, you would notice I was posting about freepers who were gleeful this guy was hurt (even before any facts were realized). Nothing to retract. The behavior of many freepers here were appalling no matter what the outcome is. That is what I was commenting on.

Furthermore, post 461 was not even addressed to me. It was addressed to another individual who noted there are numerous cases of Christians indulging in hateful acts, much as pummeling a hapless professor is a hateful act (whether done by Christians or anyone else).

That seems to be your favorite post. It's like a sweet morsel to you. Like a pig wallowing in filth you'd like to spread it around and pretend all Christians are complicit in unwarranted acts of violence. Maybe I should respond to the remainder of your posts in "oinks."

Ask the poster of post 461, he brought them into the discussion.

I'll take that as a tacit admission that abortion and terrorism have little to do with a professor who was allegedly assaulted. By your silence regarding the apparent cause for bubblehead's bruises I will take it as tacit admission that you support the formation of university classes solely intended to ridicule the beliefs of others. Why do you support university classes to make fun of other people?

"I'll take that as a tacit admission that abortion and terrorism have little to do with a professor who was allegedly assaulted."

I never said it did. That was your linkage. I was responding to a repugnant statement by someone else. If the thread had been about taxes, and the poster made a side comment about killing abortionists, I would have reacted the same way. You are obsessed with linking this with the professors alleged beating, when I have made no such claim. I won't apologize for calling out someone who is an apologist for terrorism. No matter what the original topic of the thread was.

"By your silence regarding the apparent cause for bubblehead's bruises I will take it as tacit admission that you support the formation of university classes solely intended to ridicule the beliefs of others."

?? The cause of his bruises were either two morons who should be in jail, or the whole thing was made up. Whether the professor is a left-wing idiot or not doesn't change the fact that an attack on him physically, if it happened, is wrong.

"Why do you support university classes to make fun of other people?"

I don't. Why are you changing the topic?

"That seems to be your favorite post. It's like a sweet morsel to you. Like a pig wallowing in filth you'd like to spread it around and pretend all Christians are complicit in unwarranted acts of violence."

That's a lie. My whole family are Christians. They think that terrorism in all it's forms is bad. They don't support the likes of Eric Rudolph. I have NEVER implicated ALL Christians in anything. I am talking about particular so-called Christians who have no problem being apologists for blowing people up.

" Maybe I should respond to the remainder of your posts in "oinks."

Would raise the standard of your posts.

Furthermore, assuming Rudolph is guilty of what he is charged with, he should get the Tookie treatment.

Not he shouldn't. That would be wrong. Dude admitted guilt in a deal to avoid the needle.

Did I say [post 461] was [addressed to you]? No.

Then why do you link me to that post by implication? You essentially think unsatisfactory reaction to a post you find objectionable is reason to believe I am some how linked to its intent. Not only myself, but anyone else who does not join in your self-righteous chest beating.

I am talking about particular so-called Christians who have no problem being apologists for blowing people up.

Are you a pacifist? Do you believe there is absolutely no condition under which another person's life should be taken by force?

Also, why haven't you criticized the professor who set up a class for the purpose of ridiculing people's beliefs? In your failure to criticize his actions you have proven that you support such classes. Why do you support university classes that are designed to make fun of people? I haven't seen you denounce such classes, so that must mean you support them.

"Then why do you link me to that post by implication?"

Because you jumped into a discussion of it and made a statement about my motives for talking about that post. I had no desire to talk to you. You did this to yourself, Fester. :)

"Are you a pacifist? Do you believe there is absolutely no condition under which another person's life should be taken by force?"

Is blowing up abortion clinics one of those conditions?

"Also, why haven't you criticized the professor who set up a class for the purpose of ridiculing people's beliefs?"

Stop changing the subject.

"Why do you support university classes that are designed to make fun of people?"

I don't. I have no problem with a class though that looks at creationism as a myth.

Would raise the standard of your posts.

"In your case I believe it."

You would have been better off if you did what you said you would and just posted *oinks* to me. I would have had far more respect for you. :)

I agree. But if it was a reaction to the professor's inflammatory language it was not unprovoked. He wouldn't have those bruises if he had the sense to refrain from establishing a university class dedicated to the ridicule of other people's beliefs.
