The University of Kansas is investigating pro-Donald Trump chalk that appeared on campus sidewalks Tuesday morning. KU students took to Twitter this week to express their outrage over the political speech, saying they are troubled that some of their classmates are Trump supporters, and even comparing the chalk messages to the confederate flag. The university said that they would have allowed students to chalk...
  • Obama Touch Downs Kansas in NCAA Bracket

As a graduate of KU, imagine my dread when Obama picked the Jayhawks of The University of Kansas in his (ill-famed) NCAA bracket. Sigh. The curse, once applied took its toll last night when KU went down 59-64 to Villanova, albeit a great team, but aided by the less-than-golden touch of Obama. As an author, I have this recurring nightmare that one day he'll walk down the steps of Air Force One carrying one of my books in his hand, sending it directly from the publisher to the remainder table. Is there anything this man can't wrench into disaster?

A request to establish a multicultural student government at Kansas University — which proponents said would be unprecedented among U.S. universities — was approved after intense debate Wednesday night. The KU Student Senate voted on allocating a list of required student fees for the upcoming school year, including a $2 fee increase to fund the newly created Multicultural Student Government. The fee would generate about $90,000 annually and be disseminated through KU’s Office of Multicultural Affairs. While many senators agreed with the concept of the new governing body, others expressed concern that more detailed logistics had yet to be established...

Matt Howard scored 14 and Khyle Marshall added 10 for the Bulldogs (27-9), who showed again they simply won't give in, erasing an 11-point hole in the second half. Mack's 3-pointer with 1:21 left in overtime gave Butler the lead for good at 72-70.

College conference realignment isn't taking the weekend off. Two media sources -- Jackson, Miss., television station WJTV and A&M blogger/radio host Billy Liucci -- report that Southeastern Conference commissioner Mike Slive is meeting with Texas A&M officials today in College Station, Texas. Meanwhile, The Oklahoman newspaper reports Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott met today with officials from Oklahoma and Oklahoma State in Oklahoma City, presumably to invite them to join his conference. Scott also plans to meet with Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech, according to the newspaper. Sporting News' Matt Hayes reported Thursday that the SEC will likely only expand...

Kansas chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little has reached out to her counterpart at Nebraska, urging him to keep the Cornhuskers in the Big 12 Conference. In an interview with The Associated Press, Gray-Little also said she planned to call Missouri chancellor Brady J. Deaton with the same message. Nebraska and Missouri have both said they are interested in moving to the Big Ten, which could lead to the death of the Big 12 and leave Kansas and Kansas State without a BCS conference.

Deforestation in the Amazon could possibly lead to climate changes in Kansas and contribute to global warming, according to new research by a University of Kansas professor. "We're trying to get the climate change community to look at more than just global warming," said Johannes Feddema, KU associate professor of geography. Feddema was the lead author of the research published in the Dec. 9 issue of Science in an article titled "The Importance of Land Cover Change in Simulating Future Climates." Feddema worked with six other scientists from the National Center for Atmospheric Research, based in Boulder, Colo., while there...

Paul Mirecki -- the Kansas University religious studies professor who derided Christian fundamentalists as "fundies" -- is a strange man with strange tales of alleged persecution. Contrary to his knee-jerk defenders on the Left, it is not bigoted, hateful, or intolerant for me to scrutinize his story. It's rational. The professor first created controversy in November after penning an unhinged e-mail message expressing his desire to deliver a "slap" to the "big fat face" of the "fundies" by teaching an intelligent design course "as a religious studies class under the category 'mythology.'" The message was sent to the mailing list...

ASSOCIATED PRESS LAWRENCE, Kan. -- A college professor who drew sharp criticism for comments deriding Christian fundamentalists over "intelligent design" said he was forced out as chairman of the university's religious studies department. Paul Mirecki, who remains a professor at the University of Kansas, said he had no choice when he signed the resignation letter, typed on stationary from the dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. "The University penalized me and denied me my Constitutionally protected right to speak and express my mind," he said in a written statement Friday for the Lawrence Journal-World. He said his...

If not for John Altevogt, an Edwardsville real estate broker, many of the people who became outraged by Kansas University professor Paul Mirecki’s comments might never have learned of them. Altevogt, 60, is the conservative activist and Internet discussion board contributor who compiled and spread Mirecki’s remarks across the online Kansas Conservative Network mailing list. Within hours, conservative Kansas lawmakers were raging. Some called for public hearings about Mirecki’s plan to teach a religious studies course on the controversial topic of intelligent design. Mirecki pledged to teach creationism and intelligent design as mythology. “John is very effective at what he...

You know, I'm looking at those black eyes and very minor bruise on the arm of Professor Morecki. He's the professor who let loose a torrent of hatred against Christians as he cackled about teaching Intelligent Design as mythology. Well, he lost his job, and says he got beat up, and everyone is blaming the Christians, even though his story makes no sense. And I'm thinking about this: Ever see the MASH episode where Frank Burns brings a court-martial against Hawkeye and Trapper John? Burns presents his case of how Hawkeye and Trapper mutineed against him. Amazingly, even though...

Turns out, Paul Mirecki might be a prophet. Or, Mirecki — the Kansas University professor who caught considerable hell for smack-talking religious fundamentalists — might at least be a spot-on social analyst. We interviewed Mirecki, chair of the KU religious studies department, about the modern-day tension between science and religion shortly after the Kansas Board of Education’s controversial November vote to revise classroom science standards. That was more than a week before his controversial email — in which he referred to himself as “Evil Dr. P” and called fundamentalists “fundies” — was publicized. At that time, he didn’t know that...
