Bush will win on Immigration to save the Republican Party.

Posted on 03/27/2006 9:53:41 AM PST by Pukin Dog

Just a little dose of reality for some of you going nuts over the Immigration issue, because there is NO chance that you will win on the border enforcement issue. No chance whatsoever. Only after a migrant worker program passes, making most of these illegal aliens legal, is there any chance at all to have meaningful border enforcement.

Bush is not running for office anymore, but the Republican Congress is in need of a big victory in November. This issue will kill our chances to maintain the majority, and knowing that, Bush will likely veto any bill making illegal immigration a felony, if that bill does not include the migrant worker program (call it amnesty if you want) needed to hold onto Business and Hispanic support for the Republican Party.

The Illegal Immigration Genie is out of the bottle, folks. You can’t stuff her back in without losing the House and/or Senate in November. Pragmatic minds will rule in the end, and that is a bitter pill you best swallow now.

FReepers can’t will elections for the Republican Party, but we sure can go a long way towards losing them, if we can’t put our common sense ahead of our passions on this issue. I live in San Diego County, and I see the problems with illegal immigration on a daily basis.

Whether you like it or not, much of the commerce of this country does depend on these folks to do jobs that Americans won’t do for the prevailing wage.

So, you have a choice, you can demand the border enforcement bills on their own, or you can swallow hard and consider everything you will lose if we turn off 10-15% of the electorate, in addition to the business community that depends on these workers. Yeah, they broke the law, and so do the people who hire them.

So what?

Yeah, I said it, SO WHAT? The time to be worried about that was when there were REAL Republican majorities in the Border States. It is too late now. This is a problem that cannot be solved, but only managed.

It is possible to be right and stupid at the same time. Pete Wilson tried this a few years ago, got all kinds of support for it. It passed, and Pete Wilson is gone. Then a judge overturned it anyway. That is exactly what you can expect to happen with these current bills as well. Some judge will put an injunction on enforcement, but by the time that happens, we will be knee-deep into impeachment proceeding under a Democrat Congress.

Bush won’t let that happen, neither will smarter members of the Senate and House. You won’t win, you can’t win, but you can shoot yourself and the Republican party in the head (even if you are not a member) by pursuing a program that does not include amnesty or whatever you want to call it.

We lost this one.

Get over it. There are bigger battles ahead.

Ah...another vanity from Pukin Dog that has wormed its way into "News/Activism." Seriously, PD, you have proved to wrong twice - on both the Harriet Miers and the DPW issues. Why don't you realize that your crystal ball is broken and save us your bizarre forecasts?

Immigration is THE issue that the 2008 winner will take---border enforcement. Whoever grabs that issue and runs with it.

This is my take on it, too. What it's too late for is Shamnesty ala McCainnedy style. $1000 fine?! Ridiculous, when they wouldn't pay the $75 for a Visa in the first place. We need a guestworker registry. If you're caught without being registered, you can never, ever be here as an immigrant. Period. EVER.

how do you propose getting rid of 20 million people????

Stop giving them a reason to be here and they will leave.

where do you hold them, how do you transport them???

We don't need to hold them all or transport them all. Take away there incentive to be here and they will deport themselves.

I want to be right. If an amnesty goes through I will never again give a dime to a GOP candidate.

Do you want to be right, or do you want to win? It is that simple.

I want both, and it not as simple as you state. Better read this before you go off on another RANT - - We Don't Need 'Guest Workers'

You are a fool if you think that amnesty will win anything for the GOP. I will not vote for any party that does not stand for law and order and kick out these invaders from Mexico that are criminals by any law we have on the books.

If I do not vote for the GOP, and my neighbor doesn't as well, look to Pelosi to be the next Speaker of the House. And her first order of business? Bring GWB up on charges.

What a wonderful outcome heel dragging on the immigration issue by GWB has caused. There is no good outcome for the GOP. It is time to face facts.

Anything other than securing the border and taking steps to rid ourselves of the illegal menace would be political suicide.

I could live with:

1) Securing the border, stop the invasion. 2) Enforce laws against hiring illegals. We need to level the playing field for the American labor worker. If an illegal makes $10/hr, an American has to make $20 an hour for the same job just to pay taxes and entitlements. 3) Legal or illegal, if you break the law, face the consequence. An illegal immigrant has to break numerous laws every single day to live and work here illegally.

Illegals immigrants and those who hire them break the law because there is an economic advantage for them to do so.

Aren't there a lot of large corporations (Tyson Chicken comes to mind) who hire illegals? And I believe a lot of large construction companies do also. It isn't just small companies by any means.

Whether you like it or not, much of the commerce of this country does depend on these folks to do jobs that Americans won’t do for the prevailing wage.

It's a market wage, and saying Americans won't do work for a market wage is insulting to illegals and Americans. Our modern, technological economy depends primarily on innovation, investment, and knowledge, not low skilled, uneducated invaders from the South.

jobs that Americans won’t do for the prevailing wage.

So we should bring back slavery. After all, zero is a wage Americans won't work for.

Raise the stinking wages and deport the illegals.

The Republicans will win when they do the RIGHT thing. President Bush did right with the Harriet turnaround and pulling back from his veto threat on Dubai was another good Harriet move. Now he needs to Harriet that amnesty program of his and just start deporting these illegals NOW.

Do the RIGHT thing and Win

Thanks, Pukin Dog. You are, of course, 100% right on this. There is no will out there among the American public to round up illegal Mexican immigrants. It seems to me that President Bush has again charted the best course on this policy.

And I'll say something else. It's one thing to be critical of the President's views. It's entirely another to engage in the kinds of brutal attacks on him that I've seen on FR today. It's as if these people imagine that Hillary Clinton will have a stonger anti-illegal policy than President Bush.

And one more thing. I think some people here just don't like Mexicans.

" Only after a migrant worker program passes, making most of these illegal aliens legal, is there any chance at all to have meaningful border enforcement."

Reagan already tried that, and guess what we have a bigger problem. I guess Mexico will be part of the USA since both parties are too weak to stop this invasion. I have no problem with "LEGAL" immigration. Its the "ILLEAGALS" I have issues with. They believe the law does not apply to them.

Well are we a Nation of laws, or do we let Mobs rule the day?

Thank you for posting this. I have been very depressed the last few days thinking about the national Republican Party driving right off the same cliff Pete Wilson did, and rendering us as much a national minority as we are in Kalifornia.

Maybe there is some hope sanity will prevail.

If you do not live on the border.....or in a border state, your perspective may be skewed.

The drug violence has spilled over the border, the illegals are flowing in like a tsunami. Time for the wall, force, and backup....NOW!
