Mary Cheney and Partner Are About to Be Moms
Washington Post ^ | December 6, 2006 | Amy Argetsinger and Roxanne Roberts

Posted on 12/05/2006 11:04:34 PM PST by West Coast Conservative

Mary Cheney, the vice president's openly gay daughter, is pregnant. She and her partner of 15 years, Heather Poe, are "ecstatic" about the baby, due in late spring, said a source close to the couple.

It's a baby boom for grandparents Dick and Lynne Cheney: Their older daughter, Elizabeth, went on leave as deputy assistant secretary of state before having her fifth child in July. "The vice president and Mrs. Cheney are looking forward with eager anticipation to the arrival of their sixth grandchild," spokesman Lea Anne McBride said last night.

Cheney, 37, was a key aide to her father during the 2004 reelection campaign and now is vice president for consumer advocacy at AOL. Poe, 45, a former park ranger, is renovating their Great Falls home.

News of the pregnancy will undoubtedly reignite the debate about gay marriage. During the campaign, Mary Cheney was criticized by gay activists for not being more publicly supportive of same-sex marriage. Her father said people "ought to be free to enter into any kind of relationship they want to" but deferred to the president's policy supporting a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages. Cheney herself called the proposed amendment "a gross affront to gays and lesbians everywhere" in her book, "Now It's My Turn: A Daughter's Chronicle of Political Life," which was published in May.

Cheney has described her relationship with Poe -- whom she took to last year's White House dinner honoring Prince Charles and Camilla-- as a marriage. The two met in 1988 while playing ice hockey and began dating four years later. They moved from Colorado to Virginia a year ago to be closer to Cheney's family.

Do you think Dick and Lynn Cheney should turn their back on their daughter?

Should they ignore their new granddaughter just because her mother is a lesbian?

Just how should he "stand up" for his principles?

Sex does not keep two people together for that long.

My point exactly...

If you seriously believe you do not have to be worried about Islam affecting your society then you need to think again.

IMHO there are areas of the US that are as badly affected as any in Britain or Europe

That's sniggering joke that would be made by a 10-year-old. You should be ashamed.

I strongly support the Bush Administration's war on terror and only wish we would untie our hands from the bonds of political correctness and undue fear of the MSM and so-called world public opinion to achieve victory. But I don't see where the United States, with a less than 2% Muslim population, and much of this representing black Muslims, who are mostly regarded as heretical within Islam, or people in business or professional positions, as having the critical mass that France and Germany, in particular, are developing with regard to their Muslim populations. There are pockets of Muslims, such as Dearborn, Michigan, and neighborhoods in the New York City area. Their overall impact on the country as a whole is minimal when compared with Hispanics and East and South Asians.

"She took a baby from a potential mom and dad. bottomline."

I do not have to approve of Ms. Cheney's relationship to know this is sheer balderdash.

How did she "take" a baby from anybody else? What baby did she take?

The obvious fact is, there was no baby to "take." This is not an adoption or a surrogacy -- she is carrying the baby herself. She was inseminated in some manner; probably by artificial insemination, possibly by actual intercourse with a male partner (sometimes lesbians have been known to do it that way.

When the baby is delivered, it will be from her & will be hers -- no other couple will be "deprived" of a baby. Unless you think there is only a limited amount of semen in the world and that the small amount of it that has impregnated Ms Cheney would otherwise have gone to some other woman in a heterosexual union?

I'm frustrated with "conservatives" defending anything that pertains to homos. It is not defensible. If one of my kids turned gay, I would not change my position on gays at all. If my child was gay, I would not attend a church that allowed my gay child to be a member. But I would not refuse to have my child over to my house for a visit. Having his or her "partner" over is a whole different story. When my kids are about 12 or 13 years old, they already know this is my position.

I'd rather see someone like Mary Cheney who isn't out there shoving it down our throats than the openly gay ones who are marching, having parades, carrying signs & wearing t-shirts that you wish your kids weren't with you & could read, when you see them.

I agree with you there. I remember years ago at one of my first jobs, I worked with a gay man. It was during the early 80's when gays were urged to 'come out' and militant gays were protesting. He was furious. We all knew he was gay, he knew we knew, it wasn't a big deal. He was very vocal about only one thing - the militant gays were going to 'ruin' it for everyone, gay and straight, and the militant gays would make it seem somehow abnormal that some among them would choose to be monogamous or not so 'kinky'.

He's also speaking hypothetically, so give him a break on that. Many people remember it's a much loved child, when faced with the reality.

That doesn't sound like reality to me.

I had one son who died in December of 2000; I'd take him back any way I could have him.

Which one is pregnant or are both "moms" pregnant, that's the way we used to handle "becoming a mother."
