Next Time, the NRA Will Lose
The Daily Beast's Politics Beast ^ | May 2, 2013 | Michael Tomasky

How stupid does the Senate background-check vote look now, I ask the pundits and others who thought it was dumb politics for Obama and the Democrats to push for a vote that they obviously knew they were going to lose. I’d say not very stupid at all. The nosedive taken in the polls by a number of senators who voted against the bill, most of them in red states, makes public sentiment here crystal clear. And now, for the first time since arguably right after the Reagan assassination attempt—a damn long time, in other words—legislators in Washington are feeling political heat on guns that isn’t coming from the NRA. This bill will come back to the Senate, maybe before the August recess, and it already seems possible and maybe even likely to have 60 votes next time.

You’ve seen the poll results showing at least five senators who voted against the Manchin-Toomey bill losing significant support. Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire is the only one of the five from a blue state, so it’s probably not surprising that she lost the most, 15 points. But Lisa Murkowski in Alaska lost about as much in net terms. Alaska’s other senator, Democrat Mark Begich, lost about half that. Republicans Rob Portman of Ohio and Jeff Flake of Arizona also tumbled.

Egad. Could it possibly be that those pre-vote polls of all these states by Mayor Bloomberg’s group were ... right? All the clever people pooh-poohed them, because, well, they were done by Mayors Against Illegal Guns, and because it just seemed impossible that 70 percent of people from a red state could support the bill. But the polls were evidently right, or at least a lot closer to right than the brilliant minds who laughed at Joe Manchin and Pat Toomey....

BTW, this guy is arguably to the left of Michael Moore, Gnome Chomsky, Cindy Sheehan, Gary Younge and Mr. Obama, just for reference.

Desperate screeching due to the fact that reality is intruding on their fantasy.

If anything, RINO Senators like mine (Chambliss) caught hell for their vote for it. Got my obligatory form letter from him after I called him a traitor. It said, “I support gun rights blah blah blah....I support the second amendment blah blah blah, but I voted for universal background checks to stop crazy people from getting guns....blah blah blah.

One big ass effing traitor. Isakson, too. Chambliss is already gone (retired in place and will do a lot of damage). Isakson follows lock step. I’m gonna primary him when he’s up for re-election, or vote for his opponent in the general. NO MORE EFFING RINOs.

What alternate reality is this guy living in?

The same reality that makes Mooch-elle think her ass is slender and that Kenyan-born goofus she married is a Christian.

They live in parallel universes . . . incredibly out of touch.

I admire the fact that the Left does not abandon their wounded comrades, and they do not accept defeat.

In the case of “gun control”, they had a very expensive AstroTurf operation all ready to go, targeting Senators who voted “no” on Manchin-Toomey. It’s very impressive how they have deployed OFA drones all over New Hampshire (accompanied by NYT reporters, of course) to harass Kelly Ayotte everywhere she goes.

We have nothing like this.

Well if you tell a big enough lie long enough people might start believing it.

To our defense, we aren’t despicable enough to pay relatives of those killed by gun violence to fly around the country to heckle senators.

With the huge amount of guns and ammo sold in the past year I kinda think those who want to protect their Second Amendment rights will continue to win. Those who go after them will be unemployed.

don’t scoff...the left loves to chip away at our freedoms

remember

Make no mistake, they are pushing to have the government in control of our basic civil rights such as the right of self-defense.

As usual, the Proppressives are playing with words and lies to disguise what they are doing – Schumer came out and said his goal was the precursor to Confiscation – Universal Registration.

With Universal Registration, the government will be in control of the second amendment and the rest of your civil rights.

After they attain that control they can move on to pushing their ‘Assault Weapon’ Scam and any other disarmament schemes they can hatch at their leisure.

This is why they continue to push this – it’s the whole enchilada for them.

We have nothing like this.

We don't need to create an illusion. In fact, that's part of the problem for the left. They spend so much time creating illusions that they begin to believe their own lies and when they collapse they can't accept reality.

Just last week one of our local left leaning moderate newspaper columnists warned that the left was making a big mistake in pursuing the 90% lie.

He pointed out that plenty of liberals own guns including himself and he knows the facts don’t match the rhetoric coming from the left. He called it insulting to be treated like he was too stupid to recognize the lie.

Someone please show me how they are going to round-up and confiscate 500 million firearms and trillions of rounds of ammunition from 330 million people. All the armies, law enforcement personnel and paramilitary forces in the world, even if they were magically transported to America and given rudimentary, pidgin English lessons, couldn't do it in a determined effort of 100 years. PERIOD. The only way that the democrats, squishes and other gun-grabbers could get those guns is for the public to voluntarily turn them in, en masse such as happened in Australia and England. Do you really see Americans complying with that, to any degree?
