A Denver sheriff deputy broke a man’s wrist with nunchucks during a fight while the man was being admitted to the downtown jail, Denver Department of Public Safety documents show.
Deputy Daniel Rodriguez will serve a three-day suspension for using excessive force on the man, who was intoxicated and fighting with deputies. Another seven days of suspension will be held in abeyance, meaning Rodriguez will serve those days if he breaks department policy again in the next year.
The April 25, 2021, incident prompted the Denver Sheriff Department to change its policy and ban deputies from carrying and using nunchucks, which the department calls OPNs, short for Orcutt Police Nunchaku. The change went into effect Oct. 25, 2021, department spokeswoman Daria Serna said.
Rodriguez used the nunchucks on the inmate — identified by the initials SP in the disciplinary letter — as the man was being admitted to the jail
BS, he should spend his suspension in jail. He broke bones!!! Persons in positions of power should be held to a higher standard and their punishments should be harsher than a “Civilian”.
“The April 25, 2021, incident prompted the Denver Sheriff Department to change its policy and ban deputies from carrying and using nunchucks...”
Ninja stars are still okay though, right?
Well at least he didn’t shoot the guy.
Ouch! To the 10th power!
Just practicing with Numbchucks is hazardous. If you don’t keep up with the swirling rhythms of the sticks, you can very easily smack yourself in the eye or mouth. Don’t ask me how I know.
I didn’t realize nunchucks were standard LEO gear. You learn something new everyday.
I was shocked at that too.
I don’t think Nunchucks are allowed for police use.

If a civilian was being beaten and bit by a drug-high dude he would be authorized to use deadly force.
What about the Wii version?
In some departments they are.
I found them to be to violent. Meaning they can inflict for more damage then needed.
I train extensively with them.
I much prefer the PR24 side handle baton. far easier to control the amount of force applied.
So he was using authorized gear, likely supplied by the DPD. Sorry, but if the equipment was authorized, I'd have a tough time to agree with the suspension w/o having more evidence, such as seeing the video.
Sounds like the victim has a case against the department for allowing the use of Nunchucks.
I was shocked at that too.
Soooooo.... Until Oct. 25, 2021, Denver sheriffs could carry nunchucks? Very 1970s....
It’s called assault. The culture of the criminal justice system is on display. It’s big business and they protect their own.

Or the old faithful wooden baton.
I wonder how many cops hit their own face, shin and armbone in class? I remember when I was in college people trying them, and the accident was always a few spins away. Some were hilarious.... to us.
It’s more of a restraint device than a striking weapon from the looks of it.
