The maker of the Segway Human Transporter has agreed to recall the motorized scooters because riders have been injured falling off when its batteries are low. The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall Friday, saying that three people had been injured. One suffered a head wound and needed stitches.

Oh Please!! .05% injuries? Surely if they can put a battery level on a cheap cell phone this has to come with one. People!! Look at your machine.

" I have heard that some towns are wanting them banned from city sidewalks."

I want them banned from dedicated bicycle and pedestrian paths. The two cycled engined nightmares especially.

I am a good bicycle handler, they have to work to pass me. I use the bike path system here to get away from fossil fueled and other powered vehicles.

If their numbers increase to a thrushhold, there will be a process started to ban them that would be difficult to defeat. I guarantee it.

Ground Speed in Knots was not recorded.

However a medieval Albanian unit of measurement might be appropriate: KpK Knots per Knickers

The even more ancient measurement "BSPMT,"* was recorded, but not calibrated, due to heavy usae of the road for driving cattle.

* Brown Spots per Mile Traveled

The Genesis XXX, or G3X, is produced by a small firm based in Dallas and the first production version should be out in November. Built on a Ford F-550 dually chassis, the 6 liter, 355hp V8 should propel the 8150 pound G3X from 0-60 mph in about 7.5 seconds and it will list for $250K.

Now be truthful, Arianna Huffington and Ed Begley Jr., isn't this what you would REALLY rather be driving?

I recall an episode of Jay Leno where they had this Segway guy on. They also had Russell Crowe. Crowe had to ride the scooter. I think he started to hate the Segway guy. It was quite funny.

"This is individual responsibility which the company is not responsible for. The Segway is a great invention."

If it's that dangerous then it should be either shelved or fixed -- which is exactly what the recall accomplishes.

As far as it being a "great" invention, it seems rather pointless (IMHO).

I love it.
If it came with internal roll bars and armor, I'd be in heaven.

"That's the difference: planes run out of fuel in a way that gives an opportunity for safe recovery, Segways do not. Also planes require many hours of training before one is allowed to fly them, a Segway is supposedly usable right out of the box."

Considering the complexity of aircraft, there's only so much that can be done to avoid falling out of the sky. The changes to make the Segway safe are rather trivial and have little to do with design limitations.

I couldn't disagree with a word of your post, Sam.

The helmets strapped to the heads of the ABC morning idiots riding on Segways on Intro Day was so stupifying, that I had trouble keeping focused on the machine.

The dork factor, of wearing the helmet on such a slow, goofy-looking scooter, pegged the meter (and the needle went around 3 or 4 times).

"True, but I guess it is the designers' expections of intended use, not actual use."

That's just poor design.

"As if anyone needed to be told that coffee is hot."

So if accidently someone heated coffee up to 300 F and then served it, your answer would be the same?

That's just poor design.

Maybe. I recall a lawsuit against small airplane manufacturer. The winning idiot plaintiff sued because he was able to change
the interior of the plane in such a way that he was to able to try to fly it from the rear seat so he could mount a
video camera up front to tape himself flying it from the rear (not the pilots) seat.

Hello. Not what either 1.) the designers expected, 2.) the manufacturer expected, 3.) not what the FAA expected, and
4.) anybody with common sense would expect.

Unfortunately, juries are not expected or required to have common sense.

Not teh point.
The woman who poured the coffee in her lap and claimed mental anguish due to loss of use of her husband wasn't scalded by 300 degree coffee.
If you had bothered reading further down, you'd see that there have been multiple instances people fraudulently claiming injury.
Besides, NO WOMAN IN HER RIGHT MIND WOULD ADMIT THAT SHE LOST THE USE OF HER HUBAND FOR SEX.
Or didn't you understand that either?

Yeah, you sound like the same thug that my grandchildren encounter while trying to ride their bikes with training wheels on the same trail as you, buddy. Or you may be the same thug that gets upset because my husband and I are walking along side by side along the trail.

Bicycle purists like yourself just make me angry. You seem to think you are the only one that payed taxes to build the trails and therefore you think you have the right to zip along enjoying the nice air and scenery, and be damned to the rest of us.

"Not teh point."

Huh? I wasn't making a point, but merely asking a question. I wanted to understand where you are coming from.

"The woman who poured the coffee in her lap and claimed mental anguish due to loss of use of her husband wasn't scalded by 300 degree coffee."

Exactly, and that's why I asked you a simple question.

"If you had bothered reading further down, you'd see that there have been multiple instances people fraudulently claiming injury."

Actually, I read most threads backwards so I had already read about those other cases. However, this is totally irrelevant in addressing the question I asked.

"Besides, NO WOMAN IN HER RIGHT MIND WOULD ADMIT THAT SHE LOST THE USE OF HER HUBAND FOR SEX.
Or didn't you understand that either?"

I wasn't addressing that. Or, can't you understand the simple concept that fraud does NOTHING to negate a legitimate case. Do I really need to explain this to you?

Funny, how you still haven't answered my simple post consisting of a simple question but you can post a number of totally irrelevant comments mixed with insults.

The context and tone of what you were replying to was snotty.
Besides that, you did not bother looking to see what else was said.
I do try to make a habit of checking to see what else was said.

"Actually, I read most threads backwards so I had already read about those other cases. However, this is totally irrelevant in addressing the question I asked."

If you actually DID read the thread backwards, you'd see that this was already addressed, and it IS relevant.
That proves that you are trolling for a fight.
Nice try.
Get lost.

Nah.

I actually slow down and keep my hands on the brakes when encountering children on bikes. Children on bike is a good thing. To make more bicyclists, start them out early on bikes.

I also respect the traffic laws, stopping at intersections and signalling my intention when I turn.

What surprises me about your comment is it is those seaving and speeding on the paths that are dangers to kids. If you think I don't like these things merely because they endanger and annoy me, guess again.

It is days away from the University of Oregon's Fall session, and the packs of beer and motorized scooter crowd will be terrorising the kids and waterfowl in Skinner Butte and Alten Baker parks once more.

I ride year round and give respect when it is shown me on the road or bike path. My attitude is heavily predicated by my experiences with inconsiderate and stupid people on fast gas and electric toys. And I see more and more of them and wonder what else others and myself will have to expect with these things getting the foot in the door to bringing motors on a path that should be for human muscle power only.

Good luck to you and your grandkids out there. And thanks for sharing, and good luck finding an appropriate scapegoat for bad bicycling behavior. They are out there, but it ain't me.
