Canada to U.S.: All Our Ex-Pats Are Belong to Us, and Will Tell You What to Do

Toronto-- Long harboured Canadian resentment of Canada being annexed by the United States took a 90-degree angle on July 1 with Frank McKenna, Canada’s Ambassador to the United States, turning the tables. McKenna says he will organize the more than 1 million Canadians in the United States to lecture Americans.

McKenna, who’s already sent messages to 6,000 expatriates, intends to get in touch with 100,000 of them by week’s end. The rookie ambassador is pressing the "Canadian diaspora" to arm themselves with facts, to debate Americans and to get out and lobby when Washington makes decisions that can hurt Canadians, says the Toronto Star.

Fighting the U.S. on its own soil, albeit by stealth, McKenna is calling to action Florida snowbirds, northern exiles in Arizona, Hollywood comedians and actors, investment bankers in New York and professors and students at universities across the U.S.

I spent this past weekend camping in Quebec.

Very nice, by the way. I had a great political discussion with two Quebecois liberals. One of Italian descent, one Chinese. Both liberals.

They were both on me about how America is seen as a bully. The Italian guy was telling me about how he had recently visited France, and that he was surprised at how much the French "don't like America."

At that point, I had an idea. I turned to the Chinese guy, and said "Do Taiwan people like China?"

Completely derailed the argument. At that point the Italian guy started going at it with the Chinese guy about Taiwan, and then (imagine my delight) about Tibet!

I've never handled a political discussion with liberals so well, I must say. Understand, I didn't want to talk politics at all. I just wanted to relax. They started it, as soon as they found out I was an American.

Keith's. Cheaper than water around there and a great flavour if you like the thin, big flavoured lagers. PEI culture is quite unique, I assure you. It's great. But most of Canada isn't like that.

True enough. But annexing Canada would mean we'd annex a whole passle of really venomous DemonRat votes to the Senate and to our elections. Ugh!!

You could always make us a territory, like American Samoa or Puerto Rico.

By my calculations, less than 5 million Canadians voted Liberal in our last election. If Dubya could spare maybe 2 million Republicans for a few years, we might be able to get Canada going on the right track.

First post by the way, happy 4th of July to all you Freepers!

Ambassador McKenna has finally put his finger on it. He has diagnosed the problem in Canadian-US relations. Canadians aren't preachy enough! He a frigging genius, 'cause ya know, I would never have come to that conclusion without his special Canadian insight, eh?

Dat and we spell things the wrong way, eh?

Those who live in Massachusetts should not mock others' accents or spelling. ;)

I think it's better that you're an independent country. My Napoleonic urges have long ago been satisfied.

Happy Canada Day! (a few days late).I spent some time at a Canadian facility of our U.S. company. The Canadians always knew better than to schedule a meeting involving travel or participation by U.S. personnel on July 4. They are often blindsided by Patriots' Day, however. (As is the rest of the U.S.)

Can we get the Maritimes and Western Canada without having to take the muddled middle (and especially Quebec)?

I'd go for that deal.

That would be good, wouldn't it? The Maritimes are cool, but they are fairly fiscally liberal for the record. Socially conservative (Halifax, where I go to school, is the biggest city in the Maritimes and does not allow Sunday shopping) though.

apparently the good ambassador doesnt realize that they are in the US for a reason....

My neighbor is from Canada. He's a professor at Claremont College ... brainy but an idiot. (think Ward Churchill). He never misses a chance to slam the US.

This guy is working on some preverted theory, that former Canadians, living in the US, maintain some loyality to Canada....rather curious thinking...if they were loyal to Canada; then they would still be up there....

That's that Scotch Presbyterian outlook cropping up.

George MacDonald Fraser once asked a "Wee Free" corporal in his company how he could bring himself to kill Japanese on the Sabbath. He replied that it was a work of necessity and mercy . . .

Don't see how the Maritimes could be part of Canada without acquiring some fiscally liberal policies, in self defense if nothing else. They may well be conservative in comparison with Massachusetts and Maine, though.

There's very little, I'm afraid, that Canadian liberals will be able to tell us that American liberals haven't been spewing for fifty years.

We know the routine. We've heard it for decades. Get over it.
