Wellllp, my 40 GB 4th gen iPod took a header off a tabletop the other night. "WHAP!" it said, as it hit the floor.
Long story short, the hard drive is now well and truly hosed. Read/write heads are stuck on a bad sector and the drive can't be reformatted.
While I've seen some sites out there that walk you through replacing your own hard drive, I wanted to ask FReepers if they've had any experiences in this area -- and what their experiences were.

Thank *you* for reviving horrible memories of mid-80s, Midwest Top 40 radio.

Maybe you hadn't heard, gramps, but this "trendy crap" is only fundamentally changing the music industry.
Thanks for your kind, albeit worthless, input.
Time to pull your head out of your ... Victrola there.

You two should start a "conservatives with elevation-reduced electronics support group" ping list.

They've been around too a long time to be considered simply trendy any more.
I've had mine for over 4 years.
In terms of modern technology, that's becoming old hat.
They're just great little devices.
Lately, I've used mine to download old time radio programs from the internet.
Once they're in my computer, I can download dozens of programs into my iPod in seconds.
Pretty entertaining stuff.

I took a look at the main board and hard drive, and it does not look like a hard fix to replace it. My experience with electronics is the hardest part is getting the enclosures open. The link has both the parts and tools.
Bummage dude...
