Guest Essay--JVeritas at Heart of America
Heart of America ^ | 10-04-06 | jveritas

As part of our Guest Essay series, I asked Joseph Shahda to write for us on the topic of translating Sadaam Hussien's captured documents.

Mr. Shahda, who goes by the screen name "jveritas" on FreeRepublic.com, has had a article written about him in the Boston Globe: ( http://www.boston.com/business/articles/2006/03/18/us_puts_iraqi_documents_on_the_web/ )

"Joseph Shahda earns his living as an engineer. But in his spare time, he's an intelligence agent, working to ferret out the truth about the regime of deposed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.

When the US government on Thursday began publishing captured Iraqi government documents on the Internet, Shahda eagerly began to translate the files into English and publish them on a conservative website.

''I feel a sense of duty," said Shahda, a native of Lebanon who supports President Bush's decision to invade Iraq. ''I think it's a duty for people who know Arabic to translate the documents."

Without further ado, here is the "jveritas" essay for Heart of America:

“Since March 2006 the Pentagon has released thousands of documents captured in Iraq and that belongs to different departments and apparatus in Saddam regime, like the Iraq intelligence services, the Iraqi military institutions, Saddam Presidential secretariat, etc…

Some of documents that were released so far contain some very important information about Saddam's very strong connections to terrorism, and some prove that the Saddam regime has kept secret programs related to WMD and the precursors required to make WMD.

Someone left a response to your essay at my website:

DIA vs. Jveritas:

"The Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), which is leading the exploitation effort of documents (DocEx) uncovered in Iraq, told Committee staff that 120 million plus pages of documents that were recovered in Iraq have received an initial review for intelligence information.

[...]

"DIA officials explicitly stated that they did not believe that the initial review process missed any documents of major significance regarding Iraq's links to terrorism. During an interview with Committee staff, the lead DIA analyst who follows the issue of possible connections between the Iraqi government and al-Qa'ida noted that the DIA 'continues to maintain that there was no partnership between the two organizations.' "

(Senate Intelligence Committee report, 'Postwar Findings about Iraq's WMD Programs and Links to Terrorism and How they Compare with Prewar Assessments')

Hmm. I wonder whom I should trust more?

Indeed the from 120 millions pages of documents recovered so far from Iraq, the translators looked at 34 millions of them and they did mostly partial translations and synopsis but unfortunately many important issues are missed by these translators as I have noticed by reading thousands of documents.

Saddam regime did not just meet with Bin Laden in Sudan in 1995 but also they were traing the Foreign Arab Feedayeens on terrorism acts since the year 1999. These are the same foreign Arabs who has brought death and destruction to the Iraqi people later on and they still do.

Do I have your permission to copy and paste your post #15 as a response to that individual at my website?

They would see it there I believe before they would see it here.

It would seem that this "SMB" person wants to start something with you.

His response was this:

Joseph Shahda wrote: "from 120 million pages of documents recovered so far from Iraq, the translators looked at 34 million of them"

Wrong. I have a copy of the report right here in front of me. It says clearly that all 120 million pages have received a first review.

"The Defense Intelligence Agency, which is leading the exploitation effort of documents uncovered in Iraq, told Committee staff that 120 million plus pages of documents that were recovered in Iraq have received an initial review for intelligence information." (pages 62)

Joseph Shahda wrote: "many important issues are missed by these translators as I have noticed by reading thousands of documents"

Translated documents are entered into the Intelligence Community database so that intelligence professionals can freely examine them. The documents you eventually get to look at have already been exploited for any useful information.

The DIA "examined the documents for material related to Iraq’s link to terrorism. DIA officials explicitly stated that they did not believe that the initial review process missed any documents of major significance regarding Iraq’s links to terrorism." (page 63)

I have seen the results of your work, Joseph. I'm not impressed.
