Bill Aims to Reform Unionization Process
AZCONSERVATIVE ^ | 17 Feb 2007 | John Semmens

The “Employee Free Choice Act,” (H.R. 800) now under consideration in congress, would change the process of union elections. Under the measure, workers in a workplace would sign cards that would be collected by the union. Once a majority had signed such cards all workers would be forced to join the union. This new process would replace the current law, which requires an election with secret ballots administered by the National Labor Relations Board.

Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich, (D-Ohio), a co-sponsor of the bill, said the legislation would bring “transparency to the process.” “The way it is now, the balloting is secret,” Kucinich pointed out. “There’s no way for the union officials to know who voted for or against the union.”

Kucinich asserted that knowing who votes which way is important for the unions to know so they can more accurately focus their educational efforts. “Without this information, union officials would be reduced to trying to guess who was for and against them,” Kucinich said. “How will they know who to threaten, which cars to vandalize, who to beat up? Are they supposed to pick people at random? I think we can all agree that the ability to better target the education would lead to a more efficient system.”

"all workers would be forced to join the union"

Yeah, that sounds like a free choice for employees!

--the Steelworkers in New Mexico copper mines used to have the system.

At any election, there would be a "yes" ballot and a "no" ballot. If you "agreed" with the union position, you simply got a ballot, marked and deposited it. If you chose to disagree, you had to go to a separate table, manned by the bigger shop stewards, etc., and get the "no" ballot there.

Needless to say, there were few dissenting votes---

Oh, but elections are so much more "coercive" because the company tricks workers by telling them the truth about what the union will do to them. That's not playing fair.

After all the successful cheating during the last election its now time to boost their membership and coffers. I can see it now, my dead grandmother (Who voted democrat for the first time ever this past election and who is also dead for the last 12 yrs) becoming a union member too.

Kennedy (of course) and Pelosi (of course) are pushing this bill--as I've written my congressman, this will make it far easier to unionize as people will sign a card so as not to lose friends, etc. It's not fair and it's a non-starter.
They really do claim it is more fair and more free--democrats lying again (of course).

"Kucinich asserted that knowing who votes which way is important for the unions to know so they can more accurately focus their educational efforts."

Which. logically, is the equivalent of saying that anyone voting against the union is simply 'uneducated' and therefore wrong. If Kuchinich believes this, then he should push a bill that does away with the whole thing. After all, if 'right' to have a union, then there is no reason to have a private or public vote.
