America is a strong country and Rep. Duncan Hunter of California wants it to remain that way.

That intrade thread on traction reminds me that Hunter is bound to be a sore spot for big business on at least two major points: cheap Mexican labor and cheap Chinese production.

Cheap Chinese production is doing itself in with all the recalls on Chinese made toys alone. Cheap Mexican labor maybe going by the wayside with the increase in apprehension and deportation of illegals due to the people resoundingly rejecting amnesty for illegals and demanding enforcement of illegal immigration laws.

This alone is enough to elect this man above all others. It just so happens he is better on everything else too.

Not really.

Mexico still offers the Maquiladora system.

Between 2000 and 2003 trading between China and Mexico tripled. Since 2003, Chinese has been investing in areas like Baja California, Sonora, Tamaulipas and Mexico.

China is a master at business affiliations and franchising. I can see China investing in Mexico's Maquiladora System.

I recently read that China is buying dollars at a rate of about a billion dollars a day to keep their currency as cheap as the dollar. This (in addition to extremely exploitive labor practices) keeps their exports cheap. But this is causing them inflation domestically, especially as the the dollar has been weakening, making it harder to chase downward. I don’t really understand all of the economics of it, but I’m hoping this means they are approaching some limit in their ability to do this.

HUNTER LEADS NATIONAL SECURITY COALITION AGAINST NORMALIZING TRADE RELATIONS WITH CHINA

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Duncan Hunter (CA-52) held a press conference today to discuss the national security implications of granting Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR) to the Communist regime in China. China’s trade status with the U.S. is currently debated and voted on annually by Congress, thus allowing congressional review and comment on China’s activities regarding unfair trade practices, human rights and national security. Granting PNTR to China will remove this annual review and has been a major policy initiative of the Clinton Administration who advocates making China a “strategic partner” in global trade.

“Regardless of the administration’s trade objectives, the reality is that China prepares for war,” stated Hunter. “The Communist regime is producing long-range ballistic missiles, which are targeted at U.S. military bases and American cities. They have engaged in espionage activities in which U.S. military secrets were stolen and they have developed weapon systems that threaten the U.S. and its allies. Granting PNTR to China allows the Communist leadership to continue their military modernization efforts at the expense of America’s national security.”

Congressman Hunter presented unclassified reports from the Central Intelligence Agency and the Federal Bureau of Investigation describing China’s weapon proliferation activities and their efforts to gather science and technology information to perform political, military, and economic espionage. The technology China has acquired has not only been utilized to bolster its own military capabilities, but has been sold to several countries with proliferation concerns, such as Iran and Pakistan.

“Granting PNTR to China, and removing congressional review of the Communist regime’s activities despite their aggressive behavior towards the U.S. and its allies, can only be characterized as irresponsible and stands in direct conflict to efforts to protect our nation,” said Hunter.

Several Members of Congress joined Congressman Hunter at the press conference, including Representatives Joe Barton-TX, Frank Wolf-VA, John Hostettler-IN, Joel Hefley-CO, Bob Ney-OH, Charlie Norwood-GA, Dana Rohrabacher-CA, Neil Abercrombie-HI, and Roscoe Bartlett-MD. The House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on granting PNTR to China near the end of May.

The problem with Hunter's view, is that it is seen through the eyes of a citizen of a developed nation.

For poverty to be wiped out or significantly eliminated, the world (all countries representing 6.7 billion people) need to industrialize. China is doing that. Unfortunately, starting with a country the size of China raises all sorts of alarm bells.

The developed world only represents one billion people. The developing, 5.7 billion or so. No amount of charity from the developed world into the developing world (though, very noble indeed) can eradicate poverty. The developing world, must be allowed to fend for themselves. And the best way, is through increased globalization. The developed nations get cheap labor and in return, the developing nations (including China), has access to technology. It really is a win-win situation that will take the remainder of the 21st century to complete.

But it must be allowed to continue, through China, then India, then Africa, etc.
