As of the 12/18/07 cut-off date, there are 24 Republican presidential candidates. Hunter is listed as #17 on Arizona Secretary of State site. McCain is #16. Guiliani is 24th :)

Only Republicans and Democrats can vote in the Feb. 5th primary. This means that 30% of us Independents have to re-register before January '08 if we want to vote our Preference for Duncan Hunter.

I wonder how much of a hand McPain had in this change? Last election, we could at least ask for a Republican or Libertarian ballot. Or, Dimo, of course.

Read my post #41. Arizona will have no write-ins. Everybody should check their states’ election rules, as they may have changed.

I read it. I don’t get it. Are you saying Hunter isn’t on the Arizona ballot for the primaries?

He IS on the ballot - #17 out of 24 candidates. However, Independents can't vote!!! And about 30 percent of voters in Arizona are registered Independents. We only got this notification by mail last Saturday, and have only until January to re-register.

Our one tiny radio station had a talk show this a.m., and the host was furious. I'm furious. But there's no way to change it in such a short time.

Even if it was a Hunter/Thompson ticket, I would consider not voting for Hunter. I would then write in Tancredo.

How about my suggested VP for Duncan Hunter?

See my tagline.

I'm telling you folks that, if you aren't registered for one of the two parties, you may not be able to vote. If Arizona suddenly changed the rules, other states may have done so, too. Check out your state on the Web for the Secretary of State ELECTION Primary.

Arizona isn't even calling it a Primary Election. It is now called "Preference Primary."

Independents have never been able to vote in our state primaries. Is this something new for Arizona?

I would love to see Bolton on the ticket.

Yes, they have in Arizona. Last presidential primary election, we were given the choice of the ballot for either Republican, Democrat, or Libertarian. And that's why the radio host was infuriated. We are not being given much time to re-register if we want to vote in this Preference Primary.

Think on McCain/Feingold bill - Campaign Finance Reform. It was more a matter of shutting up the new contenders than it was about money. It was plain out unConstititional - First Amendment, free speech. McCain will complete the destruction of this nation.

I can tell you why the sudden change. McCain is not well-liked in Arizona, particularly among the veterans. If he lost Arizona, such as Gore lost his state of Tennessee, he loses face.

I didn’t know other states allowed that. Hence why I’m not surprised at Arizona’s sudden change.

..I'm no expert on AZ, but doesn't McCain fashion himself as a great voice of independents?

I wouldn't think he would do anything to hurt his chances with a group which he thinks are his supporters...

Arizona is odd-ball. The major newspaper is nicknamed “The Daily Disappointment.” If that’s a disappointment, you should read our local paper. So goody-goody, makes me sick.

..I'm no expert on AZ, but doesn't McCain fashion himself as a great voice of independents?

He fashions himself as his needs arise. He relies on his POW status - torture - and vets know much of what he says he endured is untrue.

How do they know? Because there are other former POWs in our area. One we know was carried out the back way on a stretcher, away from the Hanoi Hilton cameras, weighing 90 pounds. Three years in hospitals. Mangled hands, and both hips had to be replaced.

Pictures of the officers leaving out the front on the same day, clean and smiling, are rather healthy looking.

One man we know was not a POW but lost from his unit, he crawled on his stomach, hands and knees for 2 weeks to get out of Cambodia. Fungus got his nails. He wears a morphine drip tube.

If there is anything a combat vet hates, it's someone who uses his experiences for sympathy, or for gain.

These vets don't often go over the gory stuff - they tell stories that make me laugh till I cry. Exploding cherry-jack in the mess tent, machine gunner with diarrhea, drinking cokes from cans that someone else has been using for an ashtray. "OH, that's a zucchini. We can eat that!" It's better than wormy rice balls.

Their reunions have been the most emotional times of my life, seeing how they truly are A Band of Brothers.

McCain is not.

Wow, not even breaking Reagan’s 11th, he spoke well of all the candidates. Talked well of Mike Huckabee.

Is Duncan running for VP?

Think about this: every other candidate's experience in national security is exceeded by that of Duncan Hunter.

In fact, even our current Commander-in-Chief's national security experience is exceeded by Hunter's experience.

And it shows.

Get a clue: Hunter's not running for anything but the top spot.

Why would he quit? He is spending less than he is bringing in. He is gaining an audience for his message. He is gaining a national audience, and when he goes back to the House after the election is over, he will do so with greater national stature.

A day or two ago, Joe Lieberman endorsed John McCain. Ten years ago, no one outside Connecticut would have given a frog’s feathery ass about Liberman’s opinion. His presidential and then vice-presidential run made him a national figure.

Hunter does not need to win, place or show. Just his presence in the presidential race, as long as he gets press attention, improves his standing in Congress.

..one may think he has a long-term plan at work here--that is their right

But knowing what I know about the man, he is on mission NOW and is going for it all NOW--he's not playing chess here...

..you'll recall that a hush settled over the Congress when Sam Johnson limped to the podium to give an address a short time ago in support for the troops--one of the most moving things in my memory

Sam Johnson, Jeremiah Denton, the late James Stockdale (CMH winner) are true heros and IMHO never used their experiences for political gain, though they served or sought to serve their country in the political arena.

I can't read John McCain's heart, but I have never liked how he has handled this issue in his political activity...
