I always like to take a breath during a holiday to step away from the banter and passionate debate about our politics and our history to recognize a very special group of Americans, our troops...
We argue loud and strong everyday about our beliefs and we should realize that our ability to express our beliefs so freely is equally, if not more, important than the actual beliefs themselves... And the troops protect that cherished freedom that a lot of Americans take for granted.
Let's look at some my favorite tributes and moments for our troops:
If you missed this story recently about a soldier coming home to surprise his 6-year-old son, it is one of the most moving tributes to Fathers and the extent of the sacrifice their families go through while they are away serving this great country. This one had my whole family heading for the Kleenex:

God bless the troops and God bless America.
God Bless our troops!
As you drive up Highway 38 into the tiny berg of Angelus Oaks, in Southern Claifornia, a house perched on a high hill above the highway has a beautifully made sign that says “God Bless Our Troops”.
My daughter is in the Army, in Iraq now. She will be spending her 5th Christmas away from home now. When she was home on leave last summer, I pointed the sign out to her, and she was so delighted to see it!
She is in the Signal Corp. My sister organized her co-workers and her VFW Ladies Auxillary to put together gift boxes for my daughter’s unit. Nothing big, but little creature comfort items and homemade goodies. What a difference it made for the troops!
That’s a Daddy. Bless that family.

I was in the military and spent a few Christmases over seas. Even though I was away from my family the bond that was made during those times is something that I will never forget and always be grateful for. My best friends are the people that I spent time with in the military. I wish all of our troops still serving and former, a Merry Christmas. Please get home safely and God Bless you all for everything that you do and have done!
God bless everyone in service to our country at home and abroad. God bless this great land. May His love for mankind be reflected in our lives. We owe everything to Him who made us, and Him who gave His Son for our salvation.
Amen!

Many heartfelt thanks and Merry Christmas to your daughter, and to you, the family.
The little things make all the difference in the world - and nothing quite so much as the knowledge that we at home care about those young men and women serving in harm’s way.
Please thank your daughter for her service from us. Signal Corps, huh? She may have gotten a package from us, too. We sent about 90 flat-rate boxes to two signal battalions last Spring...
Merry Christmas!
(And thank you, too, for your service.)
