On Thursday Army Col. James L. Pohl, the chief judge at the Guantanamo Bay war crimes court, said he would not heed President Obama's request for a 120-day continuance, or delay, in prosecutions of terrorism suspects.
Supervising the trial of detainee Abd al-Rahim Hussein Mohammed Abdu Al-Nashiri, Pohl called the President's motion unreasonable and unjust.

No surprise, really. President Obama’s request was patently unconstitutional as the 6th Amendment of the US Constitution guarantees a right to a speedy and public trial. A Presidential order demanding a 4 month delay - when there is no request from the prosecution OR defense - is patently unconstitutional!
In fact, if the judges upheld it, I would submit we petition the ACLU to sue the White House to remove its order as a violation of the 6th Amendment.
This is insubordination of the highest order!

Can anyone recall an instance in the past where a senior officer refused a direct order from the president??

Possibly. 0 could issue an order, and it would have to be refused... then as a part of the proceedings, it could be brought up that 0 is not CiC because of his failure to meet the Constitutional test to be President. It would be a real stretch...

I don't think many yet understand what a shot across the bow this is coming from a military attorney who is a full Colonel.
It will be interesting to see how the military deals with two on-going military operations and a requested 11% cut in funding.
They could decide to do 1 of two things: a) drag their feet to prevent a defeat of the country in the short-term; b) bugger-out with gusto so that Obama gets slapped with an obvious defeat and suffers the political consequences.
My guess is (b) will be threatened to force (a) to take place.
Good for that judge. Oh and by the way where is the liberal outcry on the ice storm? Where is Obama and FEMA?
