There's been quite a stink over David Letterman's ill-judged and offensive joke about Sarah Palin's daughter getting "knocked up" by Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees. I initially took it as a reference to Bristol Palin, who is now 18 and has a young baby.
Turns out though that the daughter who did accompany Governor Palin to the Yankees was Bristol Palin, who's 14. Letterman has taken a lot of flak and few, even on the Left, have been prepared to stick up for him with any conviction.
So Dave has apologised. Kind of. Sort of. Well, hardly at all really.
He didn't mean it to refer to Willow at all, he insisted. He was talking about Bristol. So is it OK to make that joke about an 18-year-old but not a 14-year-old? Well, it's not as bad but it's still pretty grubby. My hunch is that some half-wit wrote the joke for him and Letterman himself didn't really notice - or care much - whether it was Bristol or Willow. Either one was a cipher to get at the Alaska governor.
"We were, as we often do, making jokes about people in the news and we made some jokes about Sarah Palin and her daughter [Bristol]... and now they're upset with me..." Letterman said.
"These are not jokes made about her 14-year-old daughter. I would never, never make jokes about raping or having sex of any description with a 14-year-old girl.... Am I guilty of poor taste? Yes. Did I suggest that it was okay for her 14-year-old daughter to be having promiscuous sex? No."
He then invited Palin to appear on his show. Good luck with that Dave. Oh, and he made no mention of calling Palin a "slutty flight attendant"

1) It was about Willow. The fact that she was the only one accompanying her parents to NY was not lost on CBS, Letterman and his writers. He said “Palin’s daughter” at the stadium. That’s Willow.
2) Whether it was “meant to be Bristol” doesn’t make this any better.
3) Letterman then an evening LATER made another joke about Eliot Spitzer laying his hands on “Palin’s daughter”. Again the only one there was Willow. By then he KNEW that Willow was the one in NY. He again on purpose didn’t name the daughter, to cover his sorry rear.
4) In his lame non-excuse he further insulted Willow specifically by inferring that her rape would be “promiscuous sex” on her part! And then hurled insult against Bristol, signaling that it’s fair to smear her.
And his “invitation to the Palin’s” was a pathetic provocation.
5) To top off the travesty he yucked that the “slut joke” was funny and had some deranged guest calling Todd Palin a “tool”.
Letterman did invite the Palins to come to his sorry show.
But they should know better and NOT go. We like the thought about Todd raining his fists on Lettermans mug, but it’s not going to happen. Going on his show is a trap to further humiliate them and boost his ratings.
Hit his sponsors, CBS and local CBS affiliates.
Dave just needs some time to grow up.
What a heart felt apology. “I meant your 18 year old daughter had sex with Alex Rodriguez. That makes everything better. And, oh yeah, the slutty stewardess comment, that was a good one wasn’t it. I really got a few chuckles out of that. Hey, wanna be on my show”........ oh that Letterman is a class act.

Let’s see, Letterman jokes about public figures, just like he “pokes fun” at Gov. Palin? Did you hear the one about Biden mangling about every sentence he speaks? Or about President Obama’s lack of a birth certificate? Or about the “reverend” Wright’s antisemitic outburst yesterday? How about Nancy Pelosi’s lying about the CIA? Haven’t heard ‘em? That’s because you won’t.
Agreed, but any man who tells trashy jokes about women and it a coward himself would never ask that woman’s husband to come visit. He knows better.
Letterman used last night’s “statement of apology” as another opportunity to re-tell the jokes, just for those people who may have missed them the first time. That is how much he “regrets” using them. He is a pig. But what is worse than Letterman are the useful idiots who sit in his pay to sid in his audience and laugh at other people’s expense.
boycott anyone that advertises on his show, don’t watch his show, and hope this hate filled jerk finds that when he and his staff unfairly target someone, his show suffers.
Btw, I am very curious as to the jokes he’s made at Obama’s expense. I wonder if anyone on the right has been keeping track. I am betting they are FAR and FEW between.
