Viewing Free Republic on Blackberry Bold

Posted on 06/14/2009 9:28:23 PM PDT by Bubbette

Have a new Blackberry Bold bought specifically to keep up with email and favorite website FR. Anyone know how to view, say, the Latest Articles page without the sidebar knocking out the body of the page. As it loads you see the titles of the threads and body, but as it continues to load the sidebar knocks that off the page.

Sorry, I'm new at this. Do I need to change Java script? Change the "Browsing Experience"? I don't really know what questions to ask.

Thanks in advance for any advice. My freeping addiction needs to be fed if possible!

That’s probably because FR is designed for regular desktops and notebooks. Perhaps a special mobile version for Blackberries, iPhones, etc. should be put together at some point.

my curve is set to disable java script, unchecked on html tables and everything else is disabled emulation mode is on blackberry. FR looks good on it.
this is in browser, options. when you get to latest articles view then bookmark that, (or breaking)

On my LG Dare, on FR’s site, I select “Headers” and reduce the magnification of the phone’s screen.

You should try using an RSS feed on the Blackberry to view threads without the page formatting.

Not sure about the Blackberry browser, what is it?

I use an HTC Touch Pro with Opera and IE installed, and FR loads up great on either. IE is more stable, but Opera is a pleasure to use when it handles the FR Latest Article links. I have noticed that when the first post in a link contains an embedded video, Opera crashes, sometimes. IE does not crash on the same page.

FR works great on my HTC! Can you load a different browser on the BB?

I use Opera on my BB and the top bar where your “pings” are and the search bar gets a little jumbled but otherwise it works perfectly. I would suggest you try it out if you haven’t already.

On my blackberry curve, I just went to the Internet symbol, activated the web, then chose the go to option, typed in the FR address and away I went. It even works when I am in Thailand with international roaming but I have to watch the time (expensive).

I run FR on my Instinct all the time, it usually freaks out on 50 reply posts, but does well otherwise.

The only thing I wish the stupid thing would do is remember my login information.

At the bottom of that right-hand sidebar, click on Configure Sidebar. That will allow you to either move the items in the sidebar, or disable them.

You may also want to click on Account at the top of the page, and change your preferences to allow fewer posts per page, so it loads quicker.

Shoulda got a Pre, you could resize the screen with two fingers, and view it sideways or regular. It is an awesome phone.

I've had blackberrys and they are great phones, too. The email is very seamless. But Pre matches that, and beats it in everything else. Check it out.

Thxs. I was looking for that.

Thank you to all for the great suggestions and advice. Will work through the posts and try some different things. Nothing compares to sitting in the local DMV and being able to block out everything by freeping.

I've been on the net, Blackberry site, etc., looking for info. Knew I should come to the experts but was a little nervous about posting a trivial topic (though access to Free Republic is anything but!

My next question if anyone knows is whether you can stream audio from radio websites so I can listen to my favorite right wing extremist talk radio shows.

I think I removed the sidebar on my FR settings page for my desktop.

Should be doable on whatever machine can access FR.
