We are already seeing Sen. Ensign being attacked by local liberals, and it is spreading to the national level. However, reserve your judgement for a moment. You must consider certain facts about the affair.
* Ensign was separated from his wife at the time. * One they reconciled, he ended the affair. * The husband apparently demanded money from Ensign to keep quiet.
So it will depend on your own value system as to whether he should really take heat for violating his vows. It would be understandable to hold scorn for Ensign since he slept with the wife of an admitted friend. Of course, it gets difficult to feel bad for the husband when he attempted blackmail.

Ensign was separated at the time of the affair. He shouldn’t have gotten involved with a staffer, but this is a minor mistake. He ended the affair as soon as he reconciled with his wife and he cut off contact with the other woman (giving her a severance package).
I can understand why the cuckolded husband wanted revenge — but when he wants money for silence, he loses all sympathy. Almost makes you understand why his wife was wandering. Bet their marriage is in great shape.

So, while it appears that he was separated from his wife at the time of his relationship with his staffer, that staffer with whom he had the affair was still married and not separated.
So therefore, he simply had an affair with a married woman.
I don’t think it’s a good thing, but I’m less troubled by what he did as opposed to many other politicians. And he did own up to it rather than allowing himself to be blackmailed.
This is a far cry from the antics of Clinton or Kennedy or FDR or Spitzer or here in Michigan, Mike Cox.
And at least his wife didn’t do the stand-by-your-man thing at the press conference.
But can he simply fire an employee once he’s done having an affair with her? That might seem to be the basis for her demanding money.
She got severance pay, and she wasn’t demanding more money. Her husband was. I haven’t read whether he got severance pay too, but at one time, he also worked for Ensign.

Well, then, since the job of United States Senator does not require the exercise of judgment, there's no reason he should quit.

No, he did not. (Well, not until he knew he was about to be outed anyway, which doesn't count.)
Just once, I would like to see one of those performances turn into a proper and richly-deserved response from the wronged spouse -- an angry rant at the cheater, a kick to the nads, a public serving of divorce papers, whatever.
The person who put up the axiom that “Washington is Hollywood for ugly people” knew what they were talking about.
I remember being in an elevator back in 1995 with a young woman heading for some senator’s office. She was telling a friend she hadn’t yet met the senator, but she was apparently some sort of lobbyist.
This woman was drop dead gorgeous, and dressed to kill. That’s the type of temptations these people commonly face.
Why would you fire him..he did nothing illegal. His judgement comes into question...but if we fire everybody because we question their judgement, nobody would be employed.
A short term lapse is forgivable. If he had a history of repeated offenses’ that is a different story.

I would guess you are unmarried, because no intelligent would put up with a guy like you if she had anything approaching a healthy self-image.
He’s a pig who betrayed both his wife and his Christian principles.
