Cash for Clunkers: How to destroy an engine (& a nation)
Cash for Clunkers: How to destroy an engine. ^ | Right Now | Me, Myself and I

Why are we destroying perfectly good tools as a nation with this "Cash for Clunkers" program?

Here is a video on what they do to the vehicles that are traded in for this program.

Here's a description from the video site:

This is a video document showing how to seize an engine under the Cash for Clunkers program...After draining the engine oil the vehicle is filled with approximately two-three quarts of salt/water/silica mix. The vehicle is then started and ran till the engine seizes. Enjoy!

I drive a 20 year old car that I love. (Sure it's bluebook value may be $200, but it runs and gets me to where I need to go. It's been all over America multiple times, and is still reliable.)

Why are we encouraging the destruction of perfectly good tools across our nation? What is wrong with our leaders? Why are we encouraging this behavior? There are so many uses for these cars!

Our government is acting like Vandals.

True, except they're not acting.

In France, roving gangs of Muslim "youths" torch cars. And we mock the French. While we now PAY our own citizens $4,500 a pop to destroy their own cars. Maybe it's time we stop laughing at the French?

This is insanity. In a short period of time, the government will leave the poorer masses with absolutely no transportation. How will they get to work? How will they travel to necessary places (grocery store)? How will their children go off to college if no second-hand cars are available. It is not a matter of choice, poorer people can NOT buy a new car to go to work and especially for children who are just beginning to drive.

It is not a matter of them not WANTING to buy a new car -- they CAN'T!!!!! Millions will be without transportation creating other bigger problems than the auto industry not being able to sell new cars. This has got to be STOPPED!

Glenn Beck touched on this earlier.

He pointed out that Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered the burning of 10 million acres of cotton to help boost the price of cotton even though people who could barely afford to buy clothes.

FDR also ordered the killing of 6 million pigs to boost the price of pork even though people could barely afford to buy food.

Now FBO is taking perfectly good affordable cars off the street even though people are having trouble affording cars.

Hmmmm...and now, when Congress gets back from recess, they will decide how best to deal with the millions of Senior Citizens who can barely afford medical care.

Too bad we can’t extend this concept to government, and trade in our clunker politicians.

Exactly. The government is artificially reducing supply at a time of increased demand.

And they will still claim to represent "the working man."

I have a 1976 Chevy van with over 800,000+ miles on it (believe it or not, original drive train) and it still runs damn good. I've been working as a mechanic for over 40 years.

It has a 250 CID straight 6 cylinder engine. Turbo 350 Tranny. The only options are front disc brakes and power steering and the awfulmatic. My mother and father bought it new in '76. Mom passed away in'98 and pop gave it to me. Pop died 3 months ago at 90 yrs old and I'll never, ever get rid of it.

I've kept regular oil changes, tranny tune ups every 50 - 75,000 miles. Keep it well lubed, everything well kept.

Aside from the normal parts like brakes, tires, distributor caps, plugs, wires, belts etc.
The only parts that have been changed are:

1). Alternators (3),
2). Universal joints front and rear six sets,
3). upper and lower control arm bushings (at 600,000 miles),
4). Batteries (5),
5). Power steering hose high pressure side (1),
6). Shocks. 4 sets,
7). Exhaust front to rear (excluding manifold)4 sets,

It still has the original module in the distributor as well as the original power steering pump.

I as you were taught to be frugal and make things last.
The only other vehicles I have is a 1972 VW (good shape), 1981 HD motorcycle.

I personally think new cars are all junk. Expensive junk.
Kept well tuned my VW gets 25-30mpg. The car only costs $1,000.00.

Today people brag about getting 25mpg while paying 30k for the damn thing.

People brag about their cars lasting 250,000 miles. I tell ' em to call me when it hits a 1/2 a mil.

We've gone from a frugal do it yourself society to a throw away I can't do anything society. pitiful.

It's a good point. I think we should restrict our car destruction program to French cars only.

To: Jo Nuvark; y'all

Listen to that motor closely, folks. That’s how it’s all coming down. That is one of the finest pieces of engineering Detroit ever made, and that is the sound of evil in motion. Don’t pretend it’s a carefully controlled evolution into the future; it’s a billion dollars of your money and mine committed to the destruction of infrastructure and resources. No drilling for oil; just the paranoia of that which burns it. No creation of new technology—just paranoia over the old stuff. Turning the beast against itself-—America used to finance the destruction of America. Catch the moment the motor stops; it will never run again. It’s nice to pretend the evil has stopped; that the engine of commerce has been extinguished; that the ride has been destroyed, but catch the implication.

Comparable concepts abound—A ship too big to sink, lifeboats are irrelevant. A wooden city too great to burn, fire hydrants are pointless. A currency too widely accepted to become worthless, monetize the debt. An investment vehicle too huge to be a fraud, and run by a Jew nevertheless. Dikes that can withstand any hurricane, Trade towers too tall for a plane to touch. Even a vault at Fort Knox that could never go empty; there is no shortage of analogy. Now we have a minority whose maliciousness knows no bounds. Even doing a background check on the teleprompter in chief warrants a visit from the SS, and that’s not the Schutzstaffel.

Don’t even pretend that car coming to a stop forever is a good thing. America will be down to cannibalism as nonchalantly as it plays a video game today. Russian famines in 1891, 1921, 1932 & 1946 offer a chilling history of what follows when a despot desires to rule. All of Obama’s trends point to his admiration of his Marxist principles.

Don’t even pretend Obama loves you.

. . those people’s efforts are in vain who with unchanged lives desire to come to the people’s aid by distributing the wealth they have first taken from them.

Has anyone really looked at the economics or even the enviromental impact of the program. ... Is it a good trade-off.

Since the consumer receives either $3,500 or $4,500, but the money spent by the government per transaction amounts to (depending upon "analysis" source) $10,000-$20,000+, then the obvious answer (to a bureaucrat or politician) is a resounding, "YES!" Who is getting the rest of the money? Administrators, bureaucrats, politicians, and their cronies, of course!

Typical program, in that for every dollar to the "beneficiary", anywhere from $2 to $5 is "overhead"...but Obamacare will save money, even as C4C saves the environment and the economy.

In Germany and Austria, you can’t have a car older than 10 years old. Although there is no clunkers, I am unsure what they do with those who have “classic” cars. I believe they may allow you to have it but you can’t drive it. I think the U.S. will eventually go this route...no cars older than 10 years old on the road. In rural areas, many people drive really old cars, I guess they will need to update their cars if this ever passes.

Euthansia for cars. Keep this going around. Pictures and videos of beloved “clunker” being euthanized will send a very powerful messaage!

Instead of water, grit and silicate, they will use a morphine drip...

I haven't seen anything discussing government overhead. I did see an article that analyzed the expected number of "clunker" trade-ins that would have occurred anyway without the program during this year vs the increased number now. The approximately $20k was for each car in excess of those that would be traded-in anyway.
