Today, my daughter, FReeper Anoreth (since 11/29/03) graduates from Coast Guard Basic Training.
We're also celebrating "The Boy," son of FReeper AnAmericanMother, who is graduating today from Marine Corps Basic.
And "ForgotenKnight," grandson of Monkey Face, recently deployed with a Stryker unit to Afghanistan.
Other FReepers with children (grandchildren, nieces and nephews, etc.) in the military, please join us in celebrating all our family members who are serving our country in the military.

Thanks! We’re all thrilled, and I’m looking forward to hearing about the cutter and where it’s going, once she gets settled in.

She’s not going to like it too much, i’ll bet. Life on a cutter really sucks, most of the time, for an SA (seaman apprentice). Until she gets to A school, it really kind of sucks.

Yet AGAIN I am late to the party - busy getting ready for our Rep’s Town Hall, is that any kind of excuse?
Congratulations and thanks for serving.

... and then a group of Yanks showed up who *didnt know who Stonewall Jackson was*! That's just pitiful. A year or so ago, I was talking to a GERMAN tourist up on the Hill, and when he found out I lived in Chancellorsville (y'all shoulda stopped by, I'd've fed you) went into paeans of praise for Stonewall as the greatest/most honorable American ever. I tried to make a case for Marse Robert or Thomas Jefferson but he was adamant.
To: Monkey Face
I am so sorry! I meant to include you in the original congratulations post and hit “post” before putting your name in the box. I was going to go back to the thread to make sure I had your name/offspring correct - I didn’t - I was thinking “son” and of course it’s “grandson”. Congratulations to the both of you as well.
To: Tax-chick
Yep! She’s going to become very proficient at chipping and painting.
What rate (job) is she going for?

Please extend my thanks to all for their service to our country. No one ever says that enough.

Thanks! I should have pinged you.
It was just my husband and Bill on this trip, and they only stopped for a half hour. If I head up that way, though, I’ll be sure to let you know.
Thomas Jefferson wouldn’t get my vote, either.

She mentioned that she’d be painting on the boat. No little brothers, at least ;-).
She hasn’t said what interests her for additional training. She’s too small to be a pilot or rescue swimmer - just over 5’ tall. Maybe something in the drug-interdiction end, dog handler perhaps. She’s very good with animals.

Thank you, alarm rider. My husband was in the Air Force ten years, and my brother retired after 23.

I'll say that everyone I know who is a dog handler for police or military has simply loved the job. You have to be pretty strong-minded to handle a sharp and hardheaded Malinois or Shepherd . . . I'm a little too soft to keep a handle on one, shoot, I have my doubts about being able to manage a Chessie, even.
