Apple's iPhone predicted to find home at T-Mobile U.S. in 2010

While rumors of a possible Verizon-compatible iPhone in 2010 persist, one analyst has predicted that Apple will instead bring the iPhone to another GSM-based carrier in the U.S.: T-Mobile.

In a note to investors released this week, Doug Reid of Thomas Weisel Partners said his firm believes that T-Mobile, and not Verizon, will be the beneficiary when Apple's exclusive agreement with AT&T expires next year...

AT&T's exclusive contract with Apple for the iPhone is due to expire in 2010...

While the iPhone in its current iteration is compatible with T-Mobile's network, it is not capable of connecting to its high-speed 3G network, which operates on a unique 1700MHz spectrum. The iPhone is currently compatible with UMTS/HSDPA 3G connections at the frequencies 850MHz, 1900MHz and 2100MHz. It would be necessary, therefore, for Apple to build a new hardware model that supports T-Mobile's 3G frequency.

too bad. Verizon is going to lose my business early next year to AT&T if they do not announce an iphone release. No phone compares even remotely. Sounds like Droid is a potential competitor but it is still not an iphone.

You know those old Warner Brothers cartoons where the Road Runner would blast off, leaving a cloud of dust? That's most AT&T iPhone users the instant the iPhone supports other carriers.

At&T’s larger network and apathy will probably keep a lot of people there, but T-Mo’s prices will be attractive to a lot of people. I would think Apple would like T-Mo’s move away from subsidies as well.

I didn’t miss my iPhone as much as I thought I would when we moved to T-Mo, but at this point if it came to them I would probably get one. I like Android, but none of the phones have been a specs wise competitor yet. The rumored Sholes Tablet would be though (Droid with no physical keyboard).

T-Mobile makes sense since it’s the same type of network at AT&T, while Verizon is not... :-)

That would be a “natural” expansion for the iPhone. Verizon would not be.

T-Mobile has gigantic poblems. The biggest one is their Microsoft Danger company that the need to straighten out. You cannot download their application on the Sidekick phones.

Not including that their entire network went on a rolling blackout for 4 days and completely lost all contacts for Sidekick users.
