Question of the Day: Do Republicans really want to take back the Senate in 2010?

Here’s something that really frustrates us, because we don’t want to see Dick Durbin become the next Majority Leader once Harry Reid is removed from Congress next year — we do not want to see Democrats maintain control of the Senate, but that’s apparently what Republicans, at least in Illinois, really DO want.

Last night, we talked to some Republican friends of ours, and the topic of Rudy Giuliani came up. We’re upset Giuliani decided against taking out Kirsten Gillibrand in New York — because, as we told you, and we sincerely do mean this, we want to see every last Senator voting for the monstrous and unconstitutional Healthcare Rationing bill to be booted from the Senate. Giuliani would have beaten Gillibrand, and that would have been one more GOP Senator in Washington. As it stands now, Gillibrand and Chuck Schumer will both be re-elected in New York, when Republicans had the chance to take one of those seats away with Giuliani. Why didn’t they take it?

It’s the same story here in Illinois.

Republicans are going to allow Alexi Giannoulias, the scion of the mob banking Giannoulias family (and close personal friend and b-buddy (the “b” stands for basketball, though we can see why clarification was needed) of the current president), to take Roland Burris’ place in the Senate next year. Running Mark Kirk for Senate is worse than running Jack Ryan (then Alan Keyes) back in 2004. It’s clear Republicans don’t want to win that Senate seat. Kirk not only has infuriated conservatives and moderates in Illinois by supporting Cap & Tax, but he’s a fatally flawed candidate who Democrats are going to expose as a liar and adulterer in the general election. It is an open secret in Illinois that Kirk is gay, and just about everyone in Republican circles has heard the salacious details of his nocturnal antics, as revealed by his own wife in what’s been a nasty divorce. There are at least three closeted gay men in the Illinois Republican Congressional delegation, one of which is running for Senate in 2010 and the other one’s going to run against Durbin in 2014, most likely. These guys, and the Illinois GOP in general, are beyond stupid.

In a week, it will be the year 2010. Voters don’t care if you are gay, but they do care if you are a sleazeball who cheats on your wife with men and gets up to all manner of shennanigans while you are in Washington, typically involving the other closet case you share your Washington condo with. This is what happens with closet cases — instead of doing what they want to do in the open where people would accept them, they decide to have the fake wife and facade they believe voters want, and then think they can do what they want to do in secret and no one will ever find out. Well, just because Democrats didn’t expose you all the times you ran for Congress doesn’t mean they are going to let you win a Senate seat.

Democrats are going to out Kirk in the general election, and it’s going to be Larry Craig/Mark Foley in terms of ugly. They will expose Kirk as a liar, which fits into the narrative already out there about him, after he foolishly became one of only eight Republicans voting for Cap & Tax. Republicans we know feel Kirk stabbed them in the back, so they plan on stabbing Kirk right back if he’s on that ballot for the Senate. They won’t vote Giannoulias, but will vote for a crazy third party candidate or not vote for Senate at all, rather than send the lying Kirk to Washington with more power than this damn fool has now. Democrats almost don’t even need to out Kirk, or expose his roommate in Washington along with him. What Kirk did to himself with that Cap & Tax vote is enough to bring him down.

So, why is the GOP running Kirk?

Why isn’t Governor Hoeven running against Senator Dorgan when Hoeven would CREAM Dorgan in a Senate race, giving the GOP yet another Senate seat?

Why isn’t the GOP behind Chuck Devore in California, who would have a better shot of defeating Barbara Boxer than Carly Fiorina would (as much as we like Fiorina, but see that her heart just isn’t in this, considering her unwillingness to use a penny of her own massive fortune in the campaign)?

The GOP doesn’t seem to want to win Senate seats in New York (2 up for grabs in 2010), Illinois (1 up for grabs), California (1 up for grabs), or North Dakota (1 up for grabs).

That’s five seats, right there, the GOP could have if it ran good candidates against bad Democrats, and properly funded those campaigns. instead, they’re either running people who already poll 10-20 points behind the incumbent or are pushing candidates who will go down in flames in the general election once their personal scandals and baggage are made public.

Is the real GOP agenda to NOT win the Senate back…but just to win enough seats to prevent Democrats from passing anything else crazy for the next two years?

Is this the strategy, so that the House shakes out at 218-D and 217-R, with the Senate 51-D and 49-R so that Dr. Utopia and the Democrat Party have to own absolutely everything in Washington leading up to his re-election bid?

This is the only way we can justify what’s going on with the Illinois Senate race: the GOP doesn’t want that seat, and people in the GOP don’t like Kirk, so this is a chance to get rid of him politically by letting Democrats nuke him with the outing bomb. Kirk made a lot of enemies by voting for Cap & Tax, and is truthfully an ass to deal with who does not have a lot of support from Republicans we know. We remember clearly back in 2008 Log Cabin Republicans here in Chicago telling us they were glad McCain was the nominee because this meant McCain would have to go away after he lost — he had his chance, now he needed to get off the stage and stop being a perpetual contender for the nomination. Kirk will get his chance at the Senate bid, will fail, and the GOP will be done with him, which is what they seem to want. Of course, these fools don’t realize the rest of Illinois has to then suffer under Senator Giannoulias. The mob’s banker, cum United States Senator.

Do any of you have any better insight on what the GOP is up to with the Senate races? Because from our standpoint, they are not just missing out on some good opportunities for pickups, but they’re engaging in outright lunacy in places like Illinois.

The establishment GOP just doesn’t get it! It’s so frustrating. Giuliani is no Republican; he is a RINO! He would have sold us down the river the first chance he could. He is probably worse than McCain and Romney and is just fine where he’s at as a security adviser for the Brazilian Olympics.

Nope, they don't want to take the Senate, the House, state houses, constitutional state offices, or even non-partisan local offices. They want all of this simply given to them, as heir apparent, and the strategy is to make everything even more miserable just so they can bring us ROMNEY, the Savior of the Economy for 2012. Because NO OTHER CANDIDATE has his BUSINESS EXPERIENCE, and he SAVED THE OLYMPICS.

Ugh, I can just imagine the horrid press releases that'll come from the GOP on this...

Personally, I'd rather not live with two more years of economic crash and burn as Obama and the Rats pillage whatever credit is available in the world, then start printing the US dollar into nonexistence just so that the GOP can put Romney in. Thing is, if the GOP doesn't figure this out pretty quick, these 'wacky third party' references will be about the GOP while the rest of us go vote for a conservative.

That's exactly the GOP plan. Their goal is to eliminate the huge margin in the House and Senate and let all the junk both RINOs and RATs pass fall on Obama. It's all orchestrated.

Myth: The Republican leadership want to shepherd a fiscally and socially responsible government, but the Democrats make it impossible.

Reality: The Republican leadership wants to live in mansions, ride in limos, take exotic vacations, go to fancy parties, eat in fancy restaurants, get drunk, have sex with who or what ever, and they want you to pay for all that; just like a Democrat.

Gotta say, the GOP doesn’t mean a whole lot to me, except for Bachmann and Palin. They don’t get it, and they ain’t gonna get it, and Demint and Boner telling me to forget about the fraud in the white house ain’t gonna buy them too much loyalty from me.

Whoever wrote this does not seem to understand American elections:

1. Rudy chose not to run the GOP did not discourage him.

2. GOP voters in Illinois will pick their candidate.

3. As with Rudy no one in the GOP is telling the Govenor of N.Dak not to run.

4. As with Illinois, the GOP voters of California will pick their candidate.’

I think you’re right on #1 and probably #3, but the party definitely gets involved funding and otherwise favoring the most tepid, big-government candidates it can find—even when the primary is technically decided by the voters.

Democrats are going to out Kirk in the general election...

Too late. Martin-Trigona, one of Kirk's GOP primary opponent, just outed him.

What, are we supposed to hold a gun to people's heads, and force them to run for office?

It’s much more complex than that. Somebody needs to establish the Ronald W Reagan School of Political Communication. I’m serious. The problem isn’t that there aren’t enough conservative candidates, it’s that in terms of pushing the conservative agenda to the full electorate, they suck at doing it, royally.

The GOP Establishment has this notion that they don’t want to offend the middle/moderate voters whom they need to win elections. True, you need them to vote for you. But there’s two separate issues going on here. The first, sadly, is that many “moderate” voters simply lacks the skills to fully comprehend the conservative agenda and platform during the election cycle. To compound that, we lack the conservative candidates with the patience and skill to bridge this gap and effectively communicate a solid conservative agenda. Our candidates want to be the next Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter when they should be working to be next Reagan.

For example, let’s say I’m a moderate voter undecided in a race between Larry Liberal and Chuck Conservative, both true to their ideologies. Larry, like most liberals, must conceal much of his agenda so he “plays it safe”. Chuck meanwhile, proud of his conservative beliefs, brashes out at Larry, calling him and anyone who supports him a “baby killer” and a “marxist”. While that may be true, Chuck has inadvertently angered the moderate voter’s ego even though that moderate voter may actually hold the same conservative views as Chuck. This in term gets interpreted by the GOP Establishment and mainstream media as “mean-spirited” campaigning. So they seek out less-conservative RINO’s believing that the less-tone rhetoric will be acceptable, but they also sacrifice core beliefs in the process.

What Reagan did (and I can’t figure out why other conservative canddidates don’t follow this model) was to use the proper amount of wit, tact, charm, and communication skills he excelled at to his advantage. Rather than attack a moderate for “being stupid” or calling them “ignorant”, he took the time to hash out the issues so that anyone could understand them. Two examples come to mind are the 1961 Medicare Speech and the 1981 Economic Address. Those were written and delivered in ways that all people could logically follow and comprehend. Reagan was a master at being a partisan without being partisan (if that makes sense). He had opponents on the left running in circles not knowing what happened until after whatever victory he was seeking had been achieved.

Also notice throughout Reagan’s political career, the man never changed, he kept the same model. How easy would it have been for him to close up shop after the GOP pasting of 1964/19474? There were RINO’s and liberals in Reagan’s hey-day and for whatever reasons despite their own beliefs, they liked him, to the tune of giving Reagan two landslide victories. Perhaps they may not have understood everything Reagan advocated, but one thing was clear: they trusted him. And today, the absence of trust threatens to bring the whole GOP Establishment down.

As long as Conservatives keep voting for RINO’s, the RNC will continue to keep pushing them.

Has everybody already forgotten NY-23?

Every time the RNC pushes a RINO, they need to have it thrown in their face, EVERY SINGLE TIME NO EXCEPTIONS.

If RINO’s never win, the RNC will (hopefully) get smart and quit spending money on them.

Until Conservatives draw a line in the sand, its RINOville all the way.

Keep your powder dry!

It would be better to have a GOP minority that was actually conservative, than to have a "GOP" majority which consists largely of RINOs. In many cases RINOs are worse than Democrats, since they undermine any efforts at principled opposition to Democrats' proposals. Consider two scenarios:
  1. Democrats propose some new $10B/year program. Republicans unanimously declare the program will be counter-productive but Democrats pass it anyway for $10B/year. When the program fails miserably, the Republicans will be well-positioned to kill it and look good doing so.
  2. Democrats propose some new $10B/year program. RINOs compromise for a $5B/year program, which Democrats warn is underfunded. When the program fails miserably, the Democrats will blame the Republicans for underfunding it, and will boost the funding year after year. Republicans will really have no counter.
I would consider scenario #1 to be far preferable to scenario #2.
