So, with a headline like that above perhaps you might imagine that I, a conservative, will launch into another attack on a Republican that just isn't Republicany enough for me, right? You might think that this will be just another hard-line blogger attacking another "moderate" Republican, right? Well, by "fake Republican" I mean just that: fake.
Putting fake candidates on the ballot is a game that Chicago Democrats play in every election. Every election they put fake Republicans up against real Republicans in primary elections. What the Democrat Party does is put several shill candidates on ballots to drain votes from the real Republican candidate and to confuse voters. Sometimes Democrats even float fake Democrat opponents in order to make sure a particular Democrat wins by splitting away dissident votes to shill candidates.
Kristen McQueary of the Southtown Star has a perfect example of this sort of fake Republican appearing on a ballot in the 37th State Rep District. In this District Representative Kevin McCarthy is suddenly facing a mysterious candidate that no one in the Orland Park/Tinley Park, area (Southern Cook County) seems to know. In fact, this opponent didn't even personally campaign for her spot on the ballot...

This doesn’t just happen with Republicans. A few years ago, the old Shaw brothers machine on the south side found a guy named Jesse L. Jackson, Jr. to run against Jesse L. Jackson, Jr., the congressman in the Democratic primary. I believe he got kicked off the ballot because of some funny business with his petitions but, in the world of Chicago politics, who knows if that is so?
I remember that! What year did that happen ? Do you remember Sammy Ray Rayner;s run for mayor in a Republican primary ? I have a story to tell about that one.

It would have been either 2004 or 2006. I joined FR in June 2004, so it would have been one of those years because I remember commenting on it here. And 2008 would have been too late.
I don’t recall Sammy Ray Rayner.
Yes. His name is Mark Kirk.
On a related note, I don't see why the Orland Republicans would object to a Democrat plant on the ballot. They endorsed Kirk for the U.S. Senate, and he's more liberal than the centrist John Breaux-type Democrat who represents them. If Kirk is acceptable, they might as well endorse their RAT state representative for re-election.
They have been running rats as Republicans in the Chicago area for decades, it’s a time-honored tradition. Mayor Daley senior was elected to the state house as a Republican. Usually House Speaker Mike Madigan gets a fake Republican opponent.
I heard the GOP candidate for Secretary of State this year may be a plant.
