Bear Hug (Great Pictures)
The Great White Hunter ^ | 1/29/10 | Ryan Benson

Posted on 01/31/2010 6:05:07 PM PST by OneVike

In these series of photos, you will see a polar bear come upon some sled dogs tethered to a steak. Normally you would think that a dog tethered to a steak would be lunch for a polar bear, but these pictures tell a completely different story. From what I can see, the polar bear just wanted to play and get a little brotherly love. The professional photographer who took these photos said, the bear came back every night that week to play with the dogs. Excellent photos, taken by Norbert Rosing when he was in the wilds around Canada’s Hudson Bay.

There are a few more images here the

Cool Animal Photo Ping!

You really need to check out these photos of a wild polar bear hugging a tethered sled dog. Yes you read correctly, the dog is tied up and instead of lunch, the bear wants a hug

Normally you would think that a dog tethered to a steak would be lunch for a polar bear. . . .

I would think the *steak* would be lunch for the polar bear. Now if they were tethered to a *stake*, that's a different matter.

I’d like to teach the world to sing

I’d like to build the world a home
And furnish it with love
Grow apple trees and honey bees
And snow-white turtle doves

Chorus:
I’d like to teach the world to sing
In perfect harmony
I’d like to hold it in my arms
And keep it company
(That’s the song I hear)
I’d like to see the world for once
(Let the world sing today)
All standing hand in hand
And hear them echo through the hills
For peace throughout the land
That’s the song I hear
(That’s the song I hear)
Let the world sing today
(Let the whole wide world keep singing)
A song of peace that echoes on
And never goes away

(Repeat 1st stanza and Chorus)

Put your hand in my hand
Let’s begin today
Put your hand in my hand
Help me find a way

I suppose I’ll just have to teak your word for the fact that there’s a steak at the end of that chain. But if the dogs are truly tethered to a steak, wouldn’t they be eating the steak and if they were, wouldn’t the bear be going after the steak too?

And how “tethered” would the dog’s be if all that’s at the end of the chain is a steak? Couldn’t they drag it off wherever they wish to go?

Or did you mean that by getting them to hunker down at the steak and eat it, they’d stay put? Except, that what happens after they finish parteaking of the steak?

I thought the ice and snow where melted and the bears all starving. You would think he would just eat the dogs and the steaks.

Polar bears are remarkably intelligent and see the world as being something more than that eternal, gnawing hunger ~

Here you see our successor species suppressing his animal nature to achieve something greater.

I guess the bear had nothing to lose by dropping its defenses. Pretty amazing that the dog settled down and accepted the benign advances of the bear. I wonder how the photographer remained outside this circle of love?

That’s cool, but I suspect if the dogs had been tethered to a steak, they’d have run away from the bear dragging dinner behind them.

As it was, tethered to a stake, we got to see this heartwarming display of interspecies affection.

I am guessing he used a telephoto lens.

Now as for the steak jokes, come on people, give a guy a break. It has been a long day.....

It's soooo cold you can pound a steak into the ice and use it as a stake. lol

Old photos.

As I remember, the story behind those photos went something like this:

The game warden, or park ranger, or whatever the appropriate authority agency is, decided the bear was a menace and tranquilized it to relocate it away from humans. (or maybe it was simply shot and the carcass was removed and disposed of)

Then a new bear moved into the vacated territory. The new bear didn’t like dogs and every single one of these dogs in these photos was killed by the new bear.

This is from memory. I believe the story was in a national geographic issue a few years ago. Maybe as much as ten years ago.

Ok, then how on God’s green earth did the quote, quote, appropriate authority agency, get the tranquilized bear to play with the dogs?

That sounds more contrived then what the photographer is saying

He didn’t. Every bear is an individual. That particular individual simply liked dogs. He was unique. That’s why it was a bad move to remove him.

These pictures were shot because a photographer wanted some sunset photos of a dog sled. Set it up with a local, when he arrived for the session, so did the bear. I saw the full set. Amazing stuff. In the story, he said the local told him the bear returned every evening for two weeks to play with the dog.

Not really, the dogs and the bear’s body language are both soft and playful. The bear’s eyes and face are not in attack mode. The dogs are not showing fangs in the first picture.
